Quinta do Noval Port, 1957
Late Bottled Vintage Port
A beautiful and extremely rare bottle.
The 1957 Quinta Do Noval LBV was produced by the traditional Port method, with a long, intense maceration during alcoholic fermentation with the aim of extracting tannin, colour and flavour from the skins. This was done both by foot-treading in traditional granite lagars (shallow vats), and by pumping over. Fermentation temperatures and densities were carefully monitored to choose the ideal moment to fortify. The wines remained in the Douro until the spring when they were transported to Vila Nova de Gaia to mature in large oak vats.

Spanna, 1957
F.lli Berteletti - Riserva
Spanna has often been cited by wine experts as one of Italy’s greatest ageing wines. Spanna’s longevity can be attributed, at least in part, to the addition of smaller amounts of less tannic, more acidic grape varieties. Tasting notes: The nose opens up beautifully after about an hour and the wine has gorgeous ripe and sweet fruit, nice acidity, and perfectly softened tannins.

Barbaresco, 1956
Mirafiore
Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. Similar to its more famous sibling Barolo, Barbaresco is made from 100% Nebbiolo and shares its cult status as one of the finest wines in the world. …

Tokaji, 1956
Asju Essencia (Half litre, 50cl)
This 1956 Tokaji Aszu Essencia is a sweet wine of stunning concentration and complexity. A rich complex wine with incredibly deep concentration, bitter oranges, ginger, manuka honey aromas and flavours can be found, but though super sweet it is perfectly balanced with succulent citrus acidity. Harmony, balance and depth are absolutely world class.
After the Essencia, the Aszú Essencia (often confounded with the Essencia) is the second highest quality level among Tokaj wines. Its preparation is the same as that for the Aszú, and it is produced only in excellent years. The quality level is not indicated anymore by the number of puttonyos. …

Cockburn Port, 1955
Vintage Port
Wine Society Label
Popped and decanted for three hours. This is a great bottle of old port. The 1955 Cockburn's retains subtle fruitiness along with toffee, smoke, and dark chocolate notes. All of the flavors were melded together and the port was slightly sweet without even a trace of alcohol. Great port!

Fonseca Port, 1955
Vintage Port (Unlabelled Half bottles - Branded Capsule )
The 1955 was the only year declared by Fonseca in the 50s. The year was marked by an excellent ripening season with hot weather in July and August meaning that the crop was perfectly mature towards the end of September. Most of the well known shippers declared 1955.
Tasting Note
Medium to deep red, with a remarkably youthful ruby edge. Incredible richness and almost young grapey fruit character. As it breathes it opens to reveal spicy mature dark fruit aromas. On the palate it fills the mouth with round, marzipan richness mixed with full chocolate flavour. It is big and fresh and wonderfully balanced with a finish that mixes bottle maturity with plenty of chocolatey fresh fruit. …
