Quinta do Noval Port, 1955

Vintage Port

"Red mahogany in colour, 30% opaque. Gentle on the nose, with a pleasant and mildly fruity smell. Modest entry, with modest levels of fruit and a gentle acidic structure. Aeration brings out more fruit. Warm and pleasant afrertaste, full of orange peel and with a lingering finish. 86/100. Was significantly better a day later when it had put on substantial weight." Real Vinicola, 1955

Vintage Port

This 1955 vintage port from Real Vinicola is a real rarity. The colour of barley sugar. A faint smell of caramel on the nose. Quite thick and sweet in the mouth. Lots of barley sugar, brown sugar and burnt toffee over the top of bitter orange. Very pleasant.

Sandeman Vintage Port, 1955

MAGNUM Vintage port

a very rare magnum of Sandeman 1955 Vintage Port

Sandeman’s own bottling (in Oporto) seems lighter and more mature in colour, perhaps softer than a more recently tasted English bottling: medium deep colour; soft, sweet bouquet with some depth; very good flavour, firm, well balanced.

Taylor's Port, 1955

Vintage Port
Excellent provenance

These bottles have been kept in perfect condition in a Cambridge college cellar since first release.

Taylors 1955 Vintage Port.
Review
The only vintage Taylor’s declared in the 1950s. According to the Fladgate Partnership, ‘one of the most underrated vintages of the century’. Taylor’s own two great vineyards in the Douro, Quinta de Vargellas and Quinta de Terra Feita. Both are categorised grade A - the highest possible rating. In years when Taylor’s produces a classic vintage, wines from these two estates are blended together. As they are some 20 miles apart, and subject to very different micro climates, they combine to produce a powerful, long lived and complex vintage port.

Taylor's Port, 1955

Vintage Port (Unlabelled Label, Vintage on Capsule)

"An opage blockbuster when young, astringent and unready up until the early 1980's. In the early 1990's still fairly deep coloured; a vast, deep, high-toned, spicy nose, fairly sweet, full bodied packed with fruit extract and tannin and acidity.." Marcus Bent ****

Baron de Lustrac, 1954

Vintage Armagnac

Baron de Lustrac is a small traditional éleveur specialising in fine old Armagnac vintages. Their extensive range is sourced from neighbouring estates in the Tenereze and Mas Armagnac regions and they keep an ageing and bottling chais near Magnan, in the Bas Armagnac region.

All Armagnacs are aged in 420ltr oak barrels and sold as single vintages. The grapes used are all harvested from the one particular year, and will only be distilled if the conditions were particularly good. Perfect for big birthdays or as a special drink for the connoisseur as they truly are a fine example of the very best Armagnacs around.

Harveys Port, 1954

Vintage Port (unlabelled with embossed capsules)

The 1954 Harveys' Vintage port is actually believed to be 1954 Grahams Malvedos. Grahams have indicated that the 1954 Malvedos Vintage was supplied exclusively to Harveys of Bristol in this year who bottled it under their own brand.

Review.
The 1954 still has a deep red colour and density. On the nose there is complex, lovely bouquet of spice, baked cherry, toffee and perhaps a hint of strawberry. Great mouth-feel with weight and density. Great balance between alcohol, tannin, acidity, touch of toffee. A beautiful wine with an ever-lasting finish. 96/100. Outstanding TC VWP tasting. Mar 20.

Sherry, 1954

Harvey's Oloroso Sherry
Bottled in 1954 - Level High Shoulder

This Oloroso sherry wine, was bottled in 1954. An intense sherry that is matured in an oxygen present environment. The resulting wines are fragrant and the best examples will display dried fruits, leather, polished wood and exotic spices. Oloroso shows nutty aromas (especially walnuts), combined with polished / balsamic notes, subtle dried fruits, toasted hints, tobacco and autumn aromas. There are noticeable spicy notes in older examples. Often also meaty hints, truffle and leather.

Food & wine Pairing:
The classic pairing for an Oloroso would be red meat and game, but it will also be lovely with well-aged cheese.

Baron de Lustrac, 1953

Armagnac 1953 Vintage (Comes in original Lustrac Box as illustrated)

Armagnac is a grape brandy from the Gascony region of South-Western France. Its closest relative is cognac, another grape brandy from an appellation located about 100 miles north of Armagnac. Armagnac even though it is related to and often confused with cognac, armagnac is very different with regards to its grapes, terroir, distillation, élevage, blending, aromas, tastes and textures. In truth, France's two finest brandies made from wine are not very much alike at all.

Armagnac pre-dates cognac by about 150 years but never achieved the widespread sales figures that its relatives in the Charente obtained.

Chateau Latour, 1953

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe (Base of Neck)

*90-93 points -Critics' score Aggregated*

Exciting that this was very much intact. Great color for a sixty year old. Probably at the beginning of a decline curve - but aging gracefully. Smooth and gentle, but retaining its essential body, acidity, and identity. Aromas and flavors were classic aged Pauillac. Touches of cinnamon and clove over red fruit, cigar box, leather and a plush velvet texture. Ultimately this had astonishing strength and character. More grace than power at this stage of life. This is one classy old wine!
