Hine Grand Champagne Cognac, 1929

believed imported to England in cask by Joseph Travers & Co

Since many years Hine has upheld a tradition of making good vintage cognacs, mostly made of Grande Champagne. Many of them were early landed, late bottled cognacs: cognacs that were shipped to Great Britain one or two years after the distillation to ageing them in the humid warehouses near the chalky coasts of England. These have a reputation of being very elegant and well balanced.

Early 1929 Landed", labelled "...believed imported to England in cask by Joseph Travers & Co., London 1930", bottled early 60's at natural strength, 74 degrees proof,

Madeira, 1928

Leacock's - verdelho

John Leacock sailed to Madeira from the United Kingdom (after the death of his father) in 1741 and at the age of 15 became the youngest apprentice at the firm of Madeira merchants, Catanach and Murdoch staying until his contract expired on 11 March 1749. During his apprenticeship he had been in constant contact with an old school friend, John Patient, residing at that time in Charles Town, South Carolina who suggested that they themselves should commence trading. Leacock agreed and this marks the birth of the now world famous company.

Maury, 1928

Vin Doux Naturel, Les Vignerons de Maury Solera

This is Solera wine formed in 1928. Maury is well known for it's unique dessert wines coming from the Languedoc region. Maury can be keep for years, much like a port wine. It's a very nice fortified wine - not as hot/alcoholic as most ports at 16.5%, and with a very smooth balance of sweetness and acidity. There's a nice complexity to the fruit, and a good bite on the palate. It is not at all cloying, and, in fact, perhaps too easy to drink!

Cockburn Port, 1927

(Believed) Cockburn 1927 bottled by John Sarson and Son Leicester

A legendary wine drinking well today. Rich berry aromas soar from the glass, graced by notes of toffee and coffee. The alcohol is well integrated, almost hidden in the masses of rich, chocolaty fruit and supple, velvety mouthfeel. Shows great length on the finish, which picks up gorgeous hints of toffee and caramel. Absolutely delicious; it would be hard to say this is fading because it's so good right now. Drink or hold.

Reviews
Pale brick red, tawny rim; fine, perfumed floral aromas, subdued and slightly earthy but showing the concentration of a remarkable vintage; still rich, quite powerful with fine bitter chocolate concentration mid-palate, still ripe, intense with a fine bitter-sweet finish. 17.5. Dow's Port, 1927

Vintage Port (UK Bottled Hatch Mansfield)

Vintage Port (book, Suckling, 1990)
This was the second bottle I tasted within a span of four months. The first was more like a 20 year old Tawny. Medium red with a garnet rim, cherry and blackberry aromas, medium to light-bodied, with a lovely, delicate mouth-feel, quite dry, with elegant cherry flavours and a medium finish.

Michael Broadbent MW
Vintage Wine (book, Broadbent, 2002)
Late 1980s: palish rosy-tinged tawny; light, spicy, high-toned, madeira-like bouquet; still fairly sweet, medium weight, faded though remnants of power, good length, acidity.

Fonseca Port, 1927

Vintage Port

Review by AHB - Portforum.com "A lovely rich red colour, warm and dark; 90% opaque. Showing little on the nose, but the little it is showing is warm and fruity — and very nice. A beautiful palate, soft entry with poise and balance. The fruit is generous, sweet and ripe and still plentiful. The palate is big and rich; stunning for a port of this age. The aftertaste is amazing — so full of fruit, of rich burnt fruitcake; mouthfilling and immense. This is stunning, stunning port.".

48 hours later a 6cl sample bottle was tasted which showed even mor ecomplexity, being sweeter and rounder than the pop 'n' pour version.
