Graham's Port, 1942

Vintage Port (in neck good label)

Declared by some shippers, despite the war, and in some cases declared and bottled in 1945 to celebrate Victory. First Vintage to be bottled exclusively in Portugal, rather than shipped in cask as was customary.

Little known, and production was small due to continued post-war restrictions, but well-cellared wines are still a pleasure.

Taylor's Port, 1942

Vintage Port

This is a very rare wartime vintage in excellent condition.

A very dry winter followed by a cold spring caused flowering to be late, but some rain in June brought the grapes forward. The vintage started generally on the 2nd September; weather uncertain from the 28th and on the whole dull and cool with slow fermentations.

Tokaji, 1942

Aszu Essencia (Half litre, 50cl)

This rare 1942 Tokaji Aszu Essencia is a sweet wine of stunning concentration and complexity. A rich complex wine with incredibly deep concentration, bitter oranges, ginger, manuka honey aromas and flavours, but though super sweet it is perfectly balanced with succulent citrus acidity. Harmony, balance and depth are absolutely world class.

After the Essencia, the Aszú Essencia (often confounded with the Essencia) is the second highest quality level among Tokaj wines. Its preparation is the same as that for the Aszú, and it is produced only in excellent years. The quality level is not indicated anymore by the number of puttonyos.

Baron de Sigognac, 1941

Vintage Armagnac

Heir of many centuries of savoir-faire and tradition: the Sigognac house is one of the oldest one of Armagnac.

In Armagnac, legend has it that, one day long ago,
Baron de Sigognac took all the traditional clocks
out of his cellars.
Fascinated by the mystery surrounding
the way Armagnac ages so well,
he had some very strange timepieces made.
On these clocks, the face had ten divisions instead of twelve.
The seconds had become years, the big hand moved only once a decade and the hour hand marked the centuries.
Baron de Sigognac had found the core of the mystery of Armagnac ageing : time and patience…
The legend adds that,

Burmester Port, 1941

Colheita Port

Reviews:
"(2015) Lovely dark caramel colour, with some truffle and tea notes, edges of olive and green fruits (fig). The maturity on the palate is obvious, again with fabulous sweetness and brown sugar richness, Muscovado and walnuts, but the hallmark of the fresh orange and lemon acidity plays against that and the coffee and walnut cake sweetness and richness." Constantino Port, 1941

Vintage Port

The port house Sociedad do Vinhos Porto Constantino was founded in 1877 and was a independent producer until it was acquired by the reputable Ferreira group. The 1941 Constantino from the outstanding vintage is now a mature tawny colour. On the nose the bouquet is caramel and burnt sugar. The palate has a mature and generous taste with some sweetness left and a nice long finish. A beautiful mature port.

Cossart Gordon Madeira, 1940

Sercial Madeira

A bottling of Madeira from the 1940s from Cossart, the oldest company in the Madeira wine business.
Sercial is the name of a white grape grown in Portugal, especially on the island of Madeira. It has given name to the dryest of the four classic varieties of Madeira fortified wine.

The anglicised name Sercial came to be associated with the Madeira style rather than the grape variety, being the lightest, most acidic and delicate expression of Madeira that takes the longest to mature.

Colheita Single Harvest Tawny Port. Limited Edition

1940 Kopke Single Harvest Tawny Port
The year is 1940, we are in the Douro valley,in the ancient Quinta de São Luiz. 1940 was a difficult year, but the quality of the berries suggested a long life for the wines of this harvest.Over the next decades and generations, there were many opportunities and sustained pressure to launch this nectar onto the market. The world changed and societies evolved. Despite all this, this wine was kept for 80 long years in a cellar that resisted time. But all good things come to those who wait. That patience, together with the terroir and the mastery of ageing wines in wood has transformed this wine into a unique experience.

VINIFICATION AND AGEING
Hand-picked at the optimum time, the grapes are then destemmed, crushed and converted into wine through a process of careful skin maceration and constant churning during fermentation aimed at producing white wines full of colour and structure, with enough phenolic compounds to support a long ageing in wood. This fermentation takes place in vats (lagares) until the right degree of sweetness (baumé) is achieved. At this point, grape brandy is added to create the final fortified wine. A wine of high quality, made from one single harvest.

Garrafeira Port

A very rare bottle of 1940 Niepoort Garrafeira Port Bottled 1945 - Decanted 1970.

Stored undergound at constant temperature for several decades in a private cellar.
A unique masterpiece from Niepoort.

Currently, Niepoort is the only Port house which produces Garrafeira-style Ports.

Eduard Marius van der Niepoort, Dirk’s grandfather, gave purpose to the demijohns by bottling the best wines of the 1931 harvest, thus creating the type “Garrafeira Niepoort”.

Barros Port, 1937

Colheita Port

This is a Colheita Port of exceptional quality and elegance. Barros make their colheita ports from a single harvest. These "Vintage Tawny" ports are aged in small 550-litre oak barrels in the Vila Nova de Gaia Cellars. It is bottled at least seven years after ageing.

Dark maple colour with an amber tinge. Notes of leather, cedar and crème brûlée revealed a sublime nose as this continued to evolve in glass. Rich and soft with a sexy elegance, the Burmester showed a sweet and full-bodied style which was better on the palate. By the time I reached the end of my glass, this ‘37 had fully assuaged any concerns I had initially.
