Fonseca Port, 1948

Vintage Port (in neck unlabelled embossed capsule)

1948 Fonseca Vintage Port – James Suckling had bestowed 100 points on this VP. Tawny-centered colour with a light yellowish edge, with surprisingly light colour overall, not what I am used to. In contrast to the massive masculine style of the Taylor, this showed the smooth elegance and feminine style of a great well-aged vintage Port. It exhibits cherry and sweet cranberry fruit, along with an incredibly complex and everlasting finish.

Madeira, 1948

MBV - Barbeito bottled - Malvasia

This is a rare and limited release of the 1948 Madeira from the family cellars. The bottles are in perfect condition. There is something ethereal about tasting such a rare vintage. The 1948 Malvasia is very dry as one would expect from this style of Madeira. There is a huge amount happening on the complexity front with some bitter nut skin notes with dried flowers and citrus pith. Although quite dry, this does not come across as too severe. An electric wine that is astonishingly refreshing. Massive finish that goes on and on.

From the very good 1948 vintage, this very rare Taylors vintage port is one of the finest ports ever made

This is one of the finest ports I have ever tasted! The 1948 Taylor strong tawny colour. On the nose there was a wonderful coffee, chocolate and tobacco with an alluring herbal aroma. On the palate this port has a luscious mouth-feel and a layered incredibly complex layers of caramel, chocolate and coffee. This continued with an incredible log persistent finish. There is Vintage Port and then there is the 1948 Taylor Fladgate. It remains a monumental Port that towers over the 20th century. Nineteen forty-eight is perhaps one of the lesser-known declarations compared to 1945 and 1963, although nine houses declared that year.

Barolo, 1947

Sale

Giacomo Borgogno - Riserva
Special Offer | Was £479.95 | Now £325.00 - Save more than £150

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Tokaji, 1947

Aszu Essencia (Half Litre, 50cl)

This 1947 Tokaji Aszu Essencia is a sweet wine of stunning concentration and complexity. A rich complex wine with incredibly deep concentration, bitter oranges, ginger, manuka honey aromas and flavours, but though super sweet it is perfectly balanced with succulent citrus acidity. Harmony, balance and depth, these are absolutely world class.

After the Essencia, the Aszú Essencia (often confounded with the Essencia) is the second highest quality level among Tokaj wines. Its preparation is the same as that for the Aszú, and it is produced only in excellent years. The quality level is not indicated anymore by the number of puttonyos.
