Rioja, 1950

Berberana Gran Reserva

This 1950 Rioja is a beautiful wine that reminds me how amazing older wines can be. The nose is very mature, with lots of leather, forest floor, tobacco, cocoa, a variety of spices including clove, as well as dried strawberry and cherry, stewed tomato, tomato leaf, dried herbs, cooked beef, and lots of dried flowers almost like potpourri. On the palate, the fruit is a bit more forward than it is on the nose, and there is a little bit more complexity, which is almost hard to believe after the whirlwind of aromas we were treated to. There is a sense of livelihood on the palate, a certain energy that the wine still has which is really holding together what is a very mature profile.

Taylor's 70 Years of Tawny Port Gift, 1950

40yr Taylor's and 30yr Taylor's presented in a double leather-effect box.

A wonderful gift for a 70th Birthday or Anniversary.

This double gift box contains two 75cl bottles of Rich Tawny Port:

One 30 year old port: Scoring 92/100 Parker points, this is a fine pale orange brown with a taste of fruit cordial and honey and lemons. It is elegant with fine balance and poise with subtle acidity and a lovely nutty finish. This 30-year-old tawny from Taylor's own vineyards shows incredible length and a deep, old gold colour with hints of dried fruit and honey offsetting the rich nutty aromas. Lush, silky richness with an elegant, slightly austere quality which is quite distinctive.

1949 Cantine Antonio Ferrari, 1949

Il 49 di Antonio Ferrari Special offer was £195 | Now only £139

The Il Barone ‘49 shows a deep garnet colour. For something so old it is still fresh with a touch of oxidation on notes of black cherries, chocolate and espresso infused with sweet spices. The wine has a long finish. This is a wine from the 1949 wine harvest. Fermentation was arrested before complete leaving a high residual sugar content which has preserved the wine. The wine then went into large old Slovenian casks for ten years and then stored in tanks where it has remained until bottling this year. Antonio Ferrari was a wine merchant and negociant in Piedmont who in the mid-20th century developed an interest in the grapes of Puglia.

Barolo, 1949

Mirafiore

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Barolo, 1949

Pistone Luigi - Stravecchio Riserva

Barolo lies just south-west of Alba in Italy's north-western Piedmont region. It is considered one of the finest and longest-lived wines, often referred to as 'the king of wines and the wine of kings'. Wine production is strictly limited to the vineyards located on steep hills around the towns of Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba, Despite the different characteristics of these wines due to the varied terroir, they do display similar traits. These include a garnet color, powerful structure, firm tannins and high levels of acidity and alcohol, with the capacity to age for many years.

Cavendish port (South Africa), 1949

South Africa, Port, 30 years in oak.

South African fortified red wines have a long and distinguished history dating from the early 19th century, not long after the creation of modern Port in Portugal. As the Portuguese port industry obtained an embargo on calling anything 'port' not emanating from Portugal, this fortified wine from the Cape has to be called 'Vin de Liqueur'. Today many of the fortified red producers, concentrated around Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo, use Portuguese varietals and make wines that compete in quality with similar wines made in Portugal.

As can be seen on the label, the text relates "The wine of a single outstanding vintage in the Cape, which has been late bottled in this country after over 30 years maturation in oak wood".

Chateau Haut Brion, 1948

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe

Chateau Haut-Brion has one of the longest and most interesting histories of any Bordeaux vineyard. The property derives its name from an ancient Celtic term “Briga.” Loosely translated, this means a rise or mound in the land. This unique terroir was first prized for growing grapes to produce Bordeaux wine close to 600 years ago!

Chateau Haut Brion has an almost, unequaled track record for quality and its ability to age and evolve. This bottle from the excellent but overlooked 1948 vintage will still offer a unique drinking experience.

Fonseca Port, 1948

Vintage Port
Clearance Offer | Mid shoulder | Labelled
Was £1695 | Now £650

1948 Fonseca Vintage Port – James Suckling had bestowed 100 points on this VP. Tawny-centered colour with a light yellowish edge, with surprisingly light colour overall, not what I am used to. In contrast to the massive masculine style of the Taylor, this showed the smooth elegance and feminine style of a great well-aged vintage Port. It exhibits cherry and sweet cranberry fruit, along with an incredibly complex and everlasting finish.

Graham's Port, 1948

Vintage Port

5 Stars - Michael Broadbent.

Rich coffee/caramel flavour. Incredibly concentrated and rich, almost syrup like in its intensity. Graham's 1948 is a truly magical Vintage with great class and power, still youthful in colour and showing continuing ageing potential. This wine confirmed Graham's as a first division Vintage house.

Reviews:
"Warm, open and inviting rosehip colour. Delicious fruit, fig, crisp, liquorice. Failry sweet, lean but lovely with hot finish." Score: 5 stars Michael Broadbent.

Madeira, 1948

MBV - Barbeito bottled - Malvasia

This is a rare and limited release of the 1948 Madeira from the family cellars. The bottles are in perfect condition. There is something ethereal about tasting such a rare vintage. The 1948 Malvasia is very dry as one would expect from this style of Madeira. There is a huge amount happening on the complexity front with some bitter nut skin notes with dried flowers and citrus pith. Although quite dry, this does not come across as too severe. An electric wine that is astonishingly refreshing. Massive finish that goes on and on.

Taylor's Port, 1948

Vintage Port

100 points - Neil Martin Vinous.

The 1948 Taylor's has a strong tawny colour. On the nose there was a wonderful coffee, chocolate and tobacco. With an alluring herbal aroma. On the palate this port has a luscious feel on the palate and incredibly complex layers of caramel, chocolate and coffee. This continued with an incredible long persistent finish. VWP tasting March 2017

BY NEAL MARTIN | MAY 7, 2018

There is Vintage Port and then there is the 1948 Taylor Fladgate. It remains a monumental Port that towers over the 20th century. Nineteen forty-eight is perhaps one of the lesser-known declarations compared to 1945 and 1963, although nine houses declared that year.

Vin Santo, 1948

Spalletti *** LAST ONE ***

Vino Santo, has been made in Tuscany since at least medieval times, and was probably named 'holy wine' because of its use during the Mass.
A dessert wine bright yellow in colour with amber hues. Generous, complex aromas with hints of honey and dried fruit. A well-structured, pleasantly sweet and lingering flavour.

This unsurpassed style is derived from the inherent characteristics of Warre’s two principal vineyards: Quinta da Cavadinha and Quinta do Retiro Antigo. They complement each other very well. Cavadinha’s location, aspect and altitude translate into a cooler ripening cycle providing the freshness, fine subtle floral aromas and ideal acidity, the latter contributing significantly to the wines’ longevity.
