"...Seriously good-value sweet wine antiques that you can drink over quite a time as they retain their fruit and freshness well in an opened bottle...Roussillon around Perpignan just north of the Pyrenees has for decades been most famous with French wine drinkers for its strong sweet wines with names such as Banyuls, Maury and Rivesaltes.

Janneau, 1966

Armagnac 1966 Vintage

The 1966 Janneau Armanac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

Dolcetto, 1965

Marchesi di Barolo

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

Perdua Rubia (Sardegna), 1962

Mario Mereu

In 1949, in the Cardedu vineyard, Mario Mereu started making his own Cannonau. He called it Perda Rubia in honour of granite, that in that part of Sardinia puts on a characteristic red colour. It was in those early years that he established, once and for all, the characteristics of a wine that was soon to gain its well-deserved fame.
Perda Rubia is said to be the last of the Cannonaus. It is certainly a wine that refuses the illusion of industrialisation and still proposes the same craftsman's techniques that has made it so famous and unique since 1949. position among the Cannonaus. Those who have been lucky enough to taste it, understand as soon as they sip it why it is called the last of the Cannonaus.

Armagnac (Comes in original Sigognac Box as illustrated)

The company behind this Armagnac owns one of the most important stocks of old vintages in the whole region. They are growers as well as distillers and specialise in sourcing and ageing old casks of Armagnac.

The Armagnac is made from a blend of Baco and Ugni Blanc, the predominant grapes used in the production of Armagnac. The distillation takes place in a column still to an alcohol strength of about 54%. The spirit is then aged in local black oak casks. The alcohol content then reduces naturally to about 40% after about forty years.

1959 Anjou Moulin, 1959

J. Touchais

A beautiful sweet white wine from a producer renowned for producing wines lasting over a century. This wine is still maturing and is nearly at its peak. The wines of Moulin Touchais begin reaching their peak after twenty years, and many of the great vintages will take much longer. Vintages such as the 1953, 1959, 1964, 1969 are still maturing. The 1945, 1947 and 1949 have become classics.

Tasting Notes: Brilliant golden colour with pale gold hue. The nose is again restrained – a characteristic that appears with most of these wines. Aroma of honey, lemon and toffee apple. The palate is remarkably youthful; luscious with flavours of lemon, spice and honeycombe flavours followed by sugared pear.
