From the outstanding 2005 Rhone Vintage. A profound, smokey, leathery nose with an intriguing aromatic note like sandalwood. Beautiful palate with a gorgeous, silky texture, and a very sweet impression. Intense, wonderfully scented Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Producer Guilllaume Gonnet produces this Châteauneuf-du-Pape from equal quantities of Grenache and Syrah, the vines farmed biodynamically and on average, between 50 and 90 years old. That age of vine leads to an especially intense, pure Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with tonnes of dark fruit aroma, touches of mixed herbs and liquorice. As expected for wines of this area, the alcohol is up around 14.5% but this is still a remarkably versatile food wine.

Cossart Gordon 2005 Malmsey Colheita Madeira is made from grapes harvested in a single year. A colheita Madeira is therefore a type of dated Madeira, like vintage Madeira. It has to be aged for a minimum of 5 years in barrels before it can be called a Colheita Madeira (for Colheita Port it is a minimum of 7 years). There is no maximum age limit for Colheita Madeira but after 19 years ageing it can then legally be called Vintage Madeira. This barrel ageing gives the Colheita Madeira some of the character and complexity of a young vintage Madeira. Madeira is a complex, interesting wine and is made in virtually every vintage.

Tasted blind in Hong Kong, it had been several years since I last tasted the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru les Cherbaudes from Jean-Marie Fourrier. There is a touch of struck match on the nose that is quite high-toned for Jean-Marie, the fruit much darker when juxtaposed against Rousseau's Clos Saint Jacques '02 (for example). The palate is medium-bodied with touches of orange peel and bell pepper infusing the black fruit. It is nicely balanced, although you feel that a couple more years in bottle will do this no harm at all.

A 2004 vintage sherry wine. Attractive colour of antique gold. The aromatic complexity reveals toasted almonds, walnuts and raisins. On the palate it is pleasant, rounded and harmonious. Deliciously smooth and lingering.

The Palo Cortado sherries are particularly special within the Jerez-Xèrés-Sherry Designation of Origin. This is because despite the fact that production follows the similar physical-chemical process of oxidative ageing as with the olorosos, the result is quite different with their organoleptic characteristics falling somewhere between those of an amontillado and an oloroso.

Also classic and aging gracefully, the 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape is a medium to full-bodied, rich and mouth-filling effort, especially in the vintage. Kirsch, blackberry, garrigue, nori (seaweed/sushi wrapper which I seem to always find in this wine) and ample crushed-rock notes all round out the bouquet and on the palate, it’s nicely concentrated, with fine tannin and integrated acidity. The Malvedos has really fleshed out since I first tried it in late June. Having received considerably more decanting time, (I believe I heard 5 hours mentioned) which also helped. This '04 is an inky purple monster that presented spicy and floral notes with the essence of pure blueberry. Ultra-ripe on the palate with prune and juicy blackberry flavors that come to the fore. Good depth and medium tannins show the stuffing is all there, while finishing with a long chocoholics dream of an aftertaste.

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.
