Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1979

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

Rating: 96 - Wine Spectator
Château Mouton Rothschild's 1979 label was designed by the Japanese abstract painter Hisao Domoto.

The wine has an attractively brilliant, red-orange color and a nose that opens slowly to reveal notes of cedarwoord, spice, pepper and black berry fruit with airing. Relatively refined on the palate, it shows good structure, delicate and not overly powerful, with supple, silky tannins. Spice, caramel, earth and leather complete the pleasant impression in the mouth, combining subtle flavors with an agreeable structure. The finish is typical of the vintage, not particularly long but quite expressive.

Glenisla, 1977

37 Year Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky by Signatory (Comes in original tube as illustrated)

Pencil shavings, waxy apples, buttercream frosting, smoked cheese and burnt cinnamon on the nose. A touch of rubber, too. More buttery elements on the palate with brandy butter and apple strudel. Apricot yoghurt gives it a fruity character, whilst tree buds and toasty wood smoke balance out the sweetnes leading to a very long finish with under-ripe pear, green banana and clove.

This is a rare independent bottling of Glenisla single malt Scotch whisky (which is experimental peated whisky from the Glen Keith distillery - they no longer produce it), presented by Signatory. It was distilled back in July 1977 and set aside to mature in a single hogshead cask.

Graham's Port, 1977

Vintage Port

***92 Points Aggregated Critic Score***

The 1977 Graham's vintage port is a stunning example of a fully declared vintage. Intense candied fruit aromas intermingle with cinnamon and clove spice leading to a palate of sweet jammy figs and milk chocolate notes. A fine port with long lingering finish that is ready for drinking now but, obviously as with all great ports, has many years ahead of it.

Reviews
"...it's outstanding quality... Medium ruby-red. Aromas of milk chocolate, plum, mint and violet. Full-bodied, with medium sweetness and lots of berry and cherry fruit. Very fruity and fresh.

Chateau Margaux, 1976

Premier Grand Cru Classe (Very Top shoulder)

1976 will be remembered as the "drought year". This vintage could have been outstanding, but the rainy end to the summer firstly diluted the grapes and then forced us to harvest quickly before rot set in. Today, 1976 is a supple, almost smooth wine with a fine, distinguished and mature nose. It lacks the complexity and, especially, the power to be a true great wine. We look back emotionally on this time, when Château Margaux, which belonged to the Ginestet family.

Chateau Corbin Michotte, 1975

St Emilion Grand Cru - Good level, stained label

The 1975 Corbin Michotte is a very mature old Bordeaux. There is still plenty of deep, dark fruit richness along with with a mesquite-type smokiness and scorched earth character to maintain interest. The tannins have dried out to a smokey character but the wine is still going strong.

The Corbin Michotte vineyard was created in 1726. Until recently, Jean Noel Boidron was formerly in charge of all the families estates. Jean Noel Boidron is the seventh generation in his family to manage Chateau Corbin Michotte. The 7.1 hectare, Right Bank Bordeaux vineyard of Chateau Corbin Michotte is planted to 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Reviews and Awards:
92 points in CellarTracker

Attractive amber colour. Rich and perfumed nose dominated by the presence of the dried fruits, harmoniously involved by the spice notes. Smooth and silky in the taste, reveals an amazing structure and a good volume. The elegance describes this delicate whole and is extended in the endless and distinct finish.

Mahogany-golden colour. Great complexity of sandalwood and candied fruits. The mouth is bold and smooth. Very supple attack dominated by hints of wood and then by notes of passion fruit. The finish is spectacular.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1971

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe, Level mid shoulder

Château Lafite Rothschild 1971 proves that Lafite Rothchild's wines always live up to its reputation, and it is the most consistent of first growths.

According to Jamie Goode (of wineanorak.com): "...the 1971s have consistently been undervalued. Thirty years' on, only the best of the vintage will still be at anything like their peak. But it's worth remembering that back in '71 Bordeaux wines were still made for long ageing. Yields have become considerably higher in recent years, and it's arguable that even the best properties no longer make such long-lived wines."

Reviews..
"Has an aroma like an aged Burgundy, with cherry and spice; flavor is mature, soft, very elegant.

Barolo, 1970

Francone - Riserva

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Vintage Port

The 1970 Croft Roeda Vintage port from the outstanding 1970 Vintage is a wonderful port scoring 91 points.

Reviews
A similar russet core, though a little clearer than the ’66. The nose has good definition and focus with an attractive bouquet of cooked meats, mulberry, spice and leather. Light and feminine, although it never really develops the nuance that I was hoping for in the glass. The palate is vigorous, note quite as elegant as the ’66, a little more alcoholic and unrefined, the finish more linear with liquorice, burnt toffee and raisin. Moderate length. Drinking now. Very fine.

Chateau Latour, 1967

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe - Level in neck

***18.5/20 Jancis Robinson***
***92 Points-CellarTracker***

Reviews
Magnum . For me, the star of the evening. So complete, so much at the height of its powers, so dense yet fresh.I couldn't help thinking of that ad for menthol cigarettes - 'pure as mountain stream' was the slogan, wasn't it? Sweet and richly flattering without being remotely heavy. It's possible that in bottle sizes this wine is much more developed. Jancis Robinson

"Unquestionably the best wine produced in the Medoc in 1967, the Latour has dark ruby color with some browning at the edges, a medium- to full-bodied feel, plenty of black currant fruit, and some light, soft tannins still present.

Janneau, 1966

Armagnac 1966 Vintage

The 1966 Janneau Armanac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.
