Quinta Do Infantado, 1985

Vintage Port

Deep, almost opaque, ruby in colour, with ripe cherries, plums and dark chocolate perfumes on the nose. On the palate the wine is rich and sweet, but beautifully balanced by well-integrated tannins and a chocolate, plum and savoury cherry fruit. The finish is clean and smooth, with fine, delicate perfumes of warm, ripe fruit.

Sandeman Vintage Port, 1985

Sale

Vintage Port
Special Offer | Was 89.95 | now £64.95

"Sandeman is one of the biggest and most conspicuous of the port houses, with extensive interests in the sherry business as well. They advertise significantly and their products are well-represented in virtually every American marketplace. The quality is quite good given the quantity of wine produced...The 1985 has less of a deep-ruby/purple color, but it does offer a spice-box, fruitcake sort of aroma, mildly sweet, medium- to full-bodied flavors, and a ripe, tasty finish. Not a heavyweight, this wine represents a lighter style of vintage port. (1/ 1989) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Wine Spectator
Elegant and balanced, but a little short on concentration.

Taylor's Port, 1985

Vintage Port
Special Offer | Unlabelled Good Level | Embossed Capsule
Was £119 | Now £50

"Typical for Taylor's. Notes of woodspice and pepper, very slightly spirity. Nevertheless, a delicious texture on entry, supple and stylish, although with a very firm weight, firm tannins and good acids. Again this is fine to drink now, although it still holds some potential now. Very good indeed, bordering on excellent. From a Port Styles tasting." 17.5+/20 (November 2007), Wine Doctor (online).

Warre's Vintage Port, 1985

Vintage Port
bin-soiled labels

Warre's 1985 Vintage Port from the outstanding 1985 Vintage.

Reviews: "Lovely orange skins nose, together with nuts and figs. On the palate, it has finesse, elegance and such a sweet kickback. Massively enchanting and, now it is over the magic 20 years, perfection to drink."
Serena Sutcliffe , Cuisine & Wine Asia 2008

Very very dark. Sweet, spicy, liquorice nose. Very broad start to the palate and then dried fruits on the finish. Lots of firm tannins still. Still relatively embryonic. Heat on the finish. Lovely spice on the finish. Not the most stereotypically feminine Warre style of wine.

Chateau Margaux, 1984

Margaux, 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 93-95 Points - Wine Journal ***

"A sensational bottle that simply defied every rule about Bordeaux. Intense liquorish, cherry liqueur nose: very rich. Thick exotic, rounded palate with super-ripe Merlot. Reminds me of a Petrus! Very complex with spicy, fleshy finish. This bottle is high-toned, succulent and quite delicious. Beyond my wildest expectations. " Neil Martin, Wine Journal 2004

Chateau Rieussec, 1984

Sauternes 1er Grand Cru Classe

A very good Rieussec and one of the few decent wines produced in Bordeaux in this year. Colour rusty, deep gold. A beguiling bouquet of apricot, honey, molasses, old English Christmas cake, toffee and smoke. A beautiful texture in the mouth, weighty, viscous and satiny. Very rich, toffee, honey, treacle and poached pears and apricots. Very ripe but with sufficient acidity to hold it all together. Complex and multi-layered.

Barolo, 1983

Giacomo Borgogno

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

"This has a light nose, mulberry, a touch of wild mushroom, sloe and a touch of caramel. Moderate definition. Palate is medium-bodied, quite rustic tannins, mulberry, touch of leather, the acidity a little sharp and attacking. Course, peppery finish." Neil Martin Wine Journal tasted 2009.

Chateau Margaux, 1983

Margaux 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 96 points Robert Parker ***
*** 96 Points Wine Journal ***

Reviews
"As I have noted consistently, this can be a breathtaking wine, but having tasted it close to a dozen times since the last edition of this book, over half the bottles were marred by tainted corks. In fact, one would almost wonder if there was TCA problem in part of the wine storage area. The percentage of corked half-bottles is even higher than in the regular format. However, when clean this 1983, which has seemingly reached full maturity far faster than I would have guessed a mere four years ago, has a dense, murky plum/purple color and a gorgeous nose of smoked herbs,

Graham's Port, 1983

Vintage Port
Bin Soiled and damaged label
Was £99 | Now £70

Graham's 1983 Vintage Port is a real star performer for the excellent 1983 vintage. The Port is full-bodied, has rich floral and violet aromas, masses of strawberry flavours, very good balance. Long. Subtle finish. Excellent! This port is nicely in the drinking window but will last for decades more!

Reviews:
92 points.
Graham is another great port house, producing one of the deepest-colored and sweetest styles of vintage port. Along with Taylor and Fonseca, Graham has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous.

Niepoort Port, 1983

Vintage Port

"Niepoort is to Vintage Port what Krug is to Champagne. They are both small houses in a world dominated by large competitors but they are producing outstanding wines which very few can match." (James Suckling, Vintage Port).

Niepoort is a family company now in its fifth generation and presently managed by Dirk Niepoort. Despite being the second smallest shippers in the trade they are second to none in quality. Already famous for their classic tawny ports, they have now joined the ranks of the great producers of Vintage Port.

Vintage Port must be bottled within two years of the harvest date and be 100 per cent wine from that harvest.

Taylor's Port, 1983

Vintage Port

An outstanding port scoring 94/100 parker points.

Review: This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. Their tawnys are also among the very best, though somewhat expensive. The 1983 is wonderfully aromatic and so perfumed (a characteristic of this charming vintage), yet powerful, long and deep on the palate.

1982 Madeira

D'Oliveiras Boal Madeira

Madeira is a complex, interesting wine and is made in virtually every vintage. Due to the unique estufagem aging process Madeira is one of the longest-lived wines and also improves for days after opening, but will keep, once opened, for a month and more in a decanter.

Medium orange amber color with 1 millimeter clear meniscus; appealing, light coffee, almond, reminiscent of Moroccan bastilla on the nose with a hint of passion fruit; tight, silky textured, tasty, balanced, rounded, tart orange, tart passion fruit palate with a vague sense of light salt; long finish.

Try this medium-sweet Madeira with stews, lamb and game dishes with sweet elements and spices such as cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and fennel.

1982 Taittinger

Vintage Champagne, Masson Label

Amongst Champagne's luxury cuveés and super-premium labels, Taittinger's wines live on one extreme end of the style spectrum. While many top Champagnes can be quite difficult to approach in their youth, with laser-like focus and delineation, even austerity, Taittinger instead tends to be immediately open and welcoming. These are beautiful, delicious Champagnes, with bubbles lazily winding their way up to the surface, inviting you to take another sip.

Morgan Port, 1982

Vintage Port

The Morgan 1982 Vintage Port is an unusual find as there are very few notes on this wine.

In 2016 AHB of the Port Forum wrote of this wine
"Dark honey brown in colour, slightly hazy in appearance. Very little on the nose with hints of apricot and tangerine, oxidised. Smooth and soft in texture with barley sugar on the palate, with a gentle bitterness. Good acidity giving a pleasant lime and grapefruit undertone to the sugaryness. The lime, grapefruit and some hyacinth grows on the palate. The aftertaste is peppery with a long lime zest finish that is bitter and intense. Very long. A much better port than expected based on the appearance.

Taylor's Port, 1982

Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port

Quinta de Vargellas is bottled as a single quinta vintage port in years when an overall Taylor’s Vintage is not declared. Made from grapes grown entirely on the quinta the wine is aged in wood for two years and then bottled in the same way as a declared vintage.

The reputation of these wines have acquired a stature greater than that of many shippers declared vintages. Usually maturing earlier than the declared Taylor’s years, which are famed for their longevity, Quinta de Vargellas vintage ports are cellared in Oporto until they are ready to drink.

Veuve Clicquot, 1982

Ponsardin

Fantastic colour shows some age but still vibrant and fine bubbles. On the nose brioche, vanilla and to me lots of foie gras and apples of course. Completely different on the palate with lots of acidity and citrus shining through. This wine still has fruit and acidity enough to continue developing into a very fine old champagne.

Chateau Latour, 1981

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

"The 1981 tastes remarkably velvety and supple for such a young Latour--not that this is a malevolent occurrence--because the excellence, complexity, and richness of the wine are still present. The color is dark ruby, the bouquet offers plenty of ripe cassis and spicy oak, and the flavor is generous, silky, moderately tannic, and long in the finish. This Latour may turn out to be similar to the 1971." Parker, Bordeaux 3rd Ed.

Chateau Margaux, 1981

Margaux 1er Grand Cru Classe

The 1981 Chateau Margaux is probably the best wine from a difficult vintage.

95 points Wine Spectator
The other wine of the vintage. Seriously powerful with fabulous color and mint, cassis and berry aromas and flavors. Has a full body and is tannic; still needs time to come around. (10/1994)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
In weight and texture, the 1981 Margaux is closest in style to the 1979. It is an outstanding wine, even in the company of the monumental wines of 1982, 1983, and 1986, although it does not have the power and weight of these vintages. It is still very dark ruby/purple-colored.

Blandys Madeira, 1980

Terrantez Madeira 37.5cl HALF BOTTLE
Includes Own Box

Blandy’s Terrantez 1980

Review bySarah Ahmed "The Wine Detective". "I’m a huge Terrantez fan and this one ticks all the right boxes. Smooth on the nose with a smooze of light caramel and sweet café crème. A lick of tobacco herbality – greener – lends appetising lift. The saliva glands are at work already! And so it is in the mouth – almost creamy on entry, yet penetrating too thanks to its lively, very persistent backbone of acidity. Delicate staccato spices and a lick of toffee apple seduce. That bottled electricity, v.a. accelerant fires up a super long, reverberating finish, its delicious woody, mellow timbre deftly leavened by that light, herbal riff.
