Kinclaith, 1969

Drawn from cask 301144 20th October 2004.

Kinclaith had the distinction of being the last malt distillery to be built in Glasgow. It was part of the complex housing the Strathclyde grain distillery. after completion in 1957, the vast bulk of its production presumably went into the Long John Blends.

Kinclaith has always been extremely rare as a single malt bottling. This bottling is from a very small number of casks still known to exist today.

Magnum . For me, the star of the evening. So complete, so much at the height of its powers, so dense yet fresh.I couldn't help thinking of that ad for menthol cigarettes - 'pure as mountain stream' was the slogan, wasn't it? Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. The 1966 Janneau Armanac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. Barbaresco, 1965

Bersano - Riserva Speciale

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. Similar to its more famous sibling Barolo, Barbaresco is made from 100% Nebbiolo and shares its cult status as one of the finest wines in the world.

A good wine. On the nose, bthere is some orange marmalade, honey and spice character in this wine. Turns quite woody, with lots of caramel.

YQUEM NOTES: It was very cold from April to September which dashed hopes for good ripeness. The deluge in late September (100 mm in 8 days) was very worrying, but things changed all of a sudden. The rain stopped and it was finally warm. There were two fine passes from the 3rd to the 12th of October and a third from the 16th to the 20th, however it was difficult to find grapes with high enough sugar levels. It took 22 days in a row of energetic picking

Pauillac Premiere Grand Cru Classe (Henry Moore label)

- From magnum: Surprisingly good as I was not expecting much based on drinking other disappointing 1964 Bordeaux over the years. However, HS fill with pretty good cork was in beautiful shape. Color was brick red and showed nice tart cherries and fresh earthy aromas. The flavor profile showed reasonable concentration and while a bit earthy and a tad acidic, was full of dried red fruits and wonderful spices. While tannins were fully resolved the acid kept this reasonably fresh and inviting. A nice long rustic earthy finish kept me coming back for more.
