Armagnac, 1972

J. Dupeyron
Vintage Armagnac

The 1972 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask.

Mahogany-golden colour. Great complexity of sandalwood and candied fruits. The mouth is bold and smooth. Very supple attack dominated by hints of wood and then by notes of passion fruit. The finish is spectacular.

Baron de Sigognac, 1972

Armagnac (Comes in original wooden gift box as illustrated)

The company behind this Armagnac owns one of the most important stocks of old vintages in the whole region. They are growers as well as distillers and specialise in sourcing and ageing old casks of Armagnac.

The Armagnac is made from a blend of Baco and Ugni Blanc, the predominant grapes used in the production of Armagnac. The distillation takes place in a column still to an alcohol strength of about 54%. The spirit is then aged in local black oak casks. The alcohol content then reduces naturally to about 40% after about forty years. Presented in original wooden box.

Chateau Latour, 1972

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
top shoulder level - label bin soiled.

Despite the poor vintage, Latour produced a rather big, deeply colored, somewhat disjointed, and clumsy wine, but one with good fruit, a herbaceous, cedary bouquet, and good flavor concentration. Drink now!

Chateau Latour only selects grapes from the 47 hectares which surround the Château Latour, the heart of the estate to make the ""Grand Vin de Château Latour. The 1972 is medium-deep in colour with plenty of amber at the rim. Lots of fragrant earthy aromas. Bright fruitiness characterised the palate

Chateau Leoville Barton, 1972

St Julien 2nd Growth Classification

Quite attractive and fully mature, the Leoville Barton, while not classically structured, but rather loosely knit and too soft, nevertheless has a savoury, spicy, fruity clout, with moderately intense flavours and light tannin.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1972

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe (top shoulder - labels bin soiled)

Wassily Kandinsky label

Reviews: Stands up well for a 72. This had a deep red-brown color that was consistent throughout. It showed an intense nose of fresh asparagus which carried into the palate where it was joined by notes of celery. This exceeded expectations and was surprising drinkable for the amount of greenness it had. The half-bottle leftover the next day lost a lot of the asparagus/celery notes, having them replaced by some bell pepper and hints of cabernet fruit (cassis). One for the collectors. Tokaji, 1972

Aszu 6 Puttonyos

*** 89 Points - Wine Spectator ***

A wonderful sweet wine from this famous producer. What sets Tokaji apart from ordinary wines is that it is made from bunches of grapes which contain a high proportion of botrytised grapes. Tokaji is typically higher in alcohol than ordinary wine. This enables the wine to keep for prolonged periods of time.

The 1972 has a full palate with opulent yet finely structured layers of spiced tea and citrus fruit. Brilliant acidity with fabulous length.

"89 points Wine Spectator: "An old-style Aszú, but delicious and creamy. Dark amber color and mature character.

Barbaresco, 1971

New

Giordano Giovanni & Figli

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. Similar to its more famous sibling Barolo, Barbaresco is made from 100% Nebbiolo and shares its cult status as one of the finest wines in the world.

Barolo, 1971

Giuseppe Ravinale - Cà Rossa

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods with no problem at all.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe, Level vts

Château Lafite Rothschild 1971 proves that Lafite Rothchild's wines always live up to its reputation, and it is the most consistent of first growths.

According to Jamie Goode (of wineanorak.com): "...the 1971s have consistently been undervalued. Thirty years' on, only the best of the vintage will still be at anything like their peak. But it's worth remembering that back in '71 Bordeaux wines were still made for long ageing. Yields have become considerably higher in recent years, and it's arguable that even the best properties no longer make such long-lived wines."

Reviews..
"Has an aroma like an aged Burgundy, with cherry and spice; flavor is mature, soft, very elegant.

Chateau Margaux, 1971

Margaux Premiere Grand Cru Classe

The 1971 Margaux is a complete wine, well balanced, particularly fine and subtle, but lacking power and length. The finish is soft and tender but is starting to show a little dryness. It should be enjoyed now.

The 1971 growing season was affected by very serious "coulure" in the Merlot vines. This is when bad weather prevents the flower from setting into fruit. July and August were very hot and dry, but September was rainy, which did not stop this small crop from reaching a good ripeness level. (The picking began 1st October)

Dolcetto, 1971

New

Poggio Giuseppe

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

Montepulciano, 1971

d'Abruzzo, Riunite d'Abruzzo

Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own,

The Valpolicella zone is bordered to the west by the Bardolino DOC, located along the banks of Lake Garda, which produces similar wines to basic Valpolicella using many of the same grapes. The historical "heart" of Valpolicella winemaking is in the Monti Lessini hills located northwest of the town of Verona. In 1968, the boundaries of the region were extended far eastward towards the DOC production zone of Soave and south to the plains of the northern bank of the Po river and its tributary the Adige.
