1970 Taylor's Vintage Port, 1970

Vintage Port

The 1970 Taylor's Vintage Port is a consistently high performer and rated as one of the best of the 1970 ports.

99 points Wine Enthusiast
This wine's dark garnet color with minimal bricking suggests a relatively youthful wine and this certainly could age longer, although it's also delicious now. Wonderfully complex floral and herbal scents easily move into deep, rich flavors of chocolate and cherries, sprinkled with a healthy dose of Douro minerality and spice. Drink or hold. (JC) (2/2007)

98 points Vinous
The 1970 Taylor's Vintage Port has a tight nose, youthful with notes of liquorice, raisin, boot-polish and lemongrass.

Barbaresco, 1970

Lodali Giovanni & Figli

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. Similar to its more famous sibling Barolo, Barbaresco is made from 100% Nebbiolo and shares its cult status as one of the finest wines in the world.

Barolo, 1970

Franco Fiorina

The 1970 Franco Florina Barolo is a tribute to the producer's reputation for making age worthy wines. Still structured and good power. Fully mature, but fresh and clean. More on the undergrowth and mushrooms than floral and red-fruited side of mature nebbiolo. Excellent. Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best.

A.C.RO Vino - Eno Piemonte

Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Chateau Latour, 1970

Pauillac Premiere Grand cru Classe
Level High Shoulder | Lightly bin-soiled labels

The 1970 Latour is one of the top performing wines of the 1970 vintage scoring an impressive 98/100 Parker Points. These bottles have been cellared well for almost 5 decades.

Rating 98 Parker points.
One of the top two or three wines of the vintage (Petrus and Trotanoy are noteworthy rivals). The opaque garnet color is followed by a huge, emerging nose of black fruits, truffles, walnuts, and subtle tobacco/Graves-like scents. Full-bodied, fabulously concentrated and intense, with a sweet inner-core of fruit (a rarity in most 1970 Medocs), and high but well-integrated tannin, this enormously endowed, massive Latour should hit its prime by the end of the century and last for 2-3 decades thereafter.

Croft Port, 1970

Vintage Port
Re-waxed capsule as original damaged.

The 1970 Croft Roeda Vintage port from the outstanding 1970 Vintage is a wonderful port scoring 91 points.

Reviews
A similar russet core, though a little clearer than the ’66. The nose has good definition and focus with an attractive bouquet of cooked meats, mulberry, spice and leather. Light and feminine, although it never really develops the nuance that I was hoping for in the glass. The palate is vigorous, note quite as elegant as the ’66, a little more alcoholic and unrefined, the finish more linear with liquorice, burnt toffee and raisin. Moderate length. Drinking now. Very fine.

Dolcetto, 1970

Aldo Conterno

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

Martinez Vintage Port, 1970

Vintage Port (bottled by Gilby Vintners)

Review from AHB on the Port Forum

"Slightly darker than the Croft and slightly lighter than the Noval shown alongside this wine. Warm and spicy fruit on the nose, but quite faint. Good texture, with soft and orangey flavours hidden amongst lots of sweet strawberry. Tannins still showing gently with lively spiciness. Modest complexity, quite light bodied and acidic. Big aftertaste; long, lively and spicy finish. A wine to be drunk rather than kept. 85/100. Drunk 15 July 2010."

Offley Port, 1970

Vintage Port Grants of St James's label

A superb port from a classic vintage. The medium garnet colour has held up quite well with some bricking on the rim.The nose reveals violets, toffee, nuts, almond and candy whilst the palate is sweet. A mature port still in top form with a complex and balanced finish.

Porto Bandeira, 1970

New

Vintage Port-Style Wine
Low Shoulder | Special Offer Was £99 | Now £65

The 1970 Port-style wine from Bandeira is very unusual. Our tasting reveals that it is not typical of a 1970 port in that it still has lots of colour and candied fruit notes. We believe that it is a fortified field blend of grapes. Very full-bodied and dense with lots of black fruits - rustic, not complicated. TC 03/20

Porto Santos Junior, 1970

Vintage Port

Orange in colour, with a very pale orange rim. Stewed fruit on the nose; sweet, but cut with a lovely lime acidity. Sweet entry, a touch hollow but a pleasant medicinal fruitiness - a touch of harshness in the mid-palate. A lovely, sweet aniseed balls aftertaste; some heat in the middle fo the finish, which fades slowly and enjoyably.
