Chateau Latour, 1993

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

A terrific wine for the vintage, Latour's 1993 reveals an opaque purple color, a backward, cedar, black walnut, cassis, and earth-scented nose, medium to full body, gorgeously rich, concentrated fruit, moderately high tannin (but no astringency), and a sweet, long, powerful finish. The wine does not possess any of the vegetal, green pepper characteristics of the vintage, nor any hint of hollowness or harshness. This wine may prove to merit an even higher rating. Is this vintage the modern day clone of the 1967 and 1971?

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1993

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe level in neck, nick on label

*** 90 Points - Robert Parker ***
Reviews: " The 1993 is a beautifully made wine which could be considered a sleeper of the vintage. The wine boasts a dark purple color, followed by a sweet, pain grillee, roasted nut, and cassis-scented bouquet that is just beginning to open. In the mouth, the wine may not possess the body and volume of a vintage such as 1990 or 1989, but there is more richness of fruit, a sweet, ripe, pureness to the wine, as well as medium body and outstanding balance. This moderately tannic, well-focused, surprisingly rich 1993 is capable of 15-20 years of evolution. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015.

Chateau Yquem, 1993

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe

A beautiful, slightly golden yellow, this wine is still very young to express much on the initial nose. After swirling, and even more so after a few minutes in the glass, there come scents of citrus, raisins and also more floral aromas with delicate lime flower. These are still early days and time is needed for these impressions to develop. In the mouth the great quality and potential are obvious. The attack is round, and the volume quickly fills the whole mouth. What sweetness and what pleasure - with just enough acidity. Flavours of mandarin, apricot, fruit paste, then the vanillary, lightly grilled notes associated with the long élevage in barrel.

Champagne Perrier-Jouet, 1990

Belle Epoque Brut
Includes Presentation case with Four Flute Glasses

This beautiful Vintage Champagne from the 1990 Vintage comes in a Silk-Lined Presentation case with four hand-painted flute glasses featuring the famous anemone wreathed in gold that was placed on the bottle of the first Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque vintage, back in 1964.

Tasting Note:
Beautiful Manuka honey and doughy nose with and a palate of deeply flavoured ripe creamy yellow grapefruits, autumnal apples, mandarin fruits and pears with fresh waffles. The bubbles are there but ever so subtle, typical of a vintage Champagne. Only the slightest oxidized note. A beautiful bottle!

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1990

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

Scintillating nose; absolutely gorgeous aromas of vanilla-smothered berries, violet, and a fine, earthy, truffly quality with hints of cedar, coffee and spice. Deep and deliciously inviting. The palate lets this stunning first impression down slightly, with slightly under-powered cherry and blackcurrant fruit. There's a background of sweet oak, and good freshness with balanced acidity and fine tannins.

Chateau Yquem, 1990

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe

Yquem is indisputedly the best wine in Sauternes and may well be the finest sweet wine in the world.

Meticulously made with incredible power, texture, complexity and ageing potential The 1989 is a powerful, intense, rich wine; astonishingly complex; perfectly balanced and a fine, persistent finish.

Spends three years in barrel, and keeps and improves for 15, 50, even 100+ years in great vintages.

Yquem recommend trying this with oysters, lobster, foie gras, or just on its own.

Chateau Latour, 1988

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

91 points - Robert Parker
92 Points - Wine journal

"The best showing yet for a wine from this under-rated vintage, the dark garnet-coloured 1988 Latour reveals slight amber at the edge. A bouquet of melted tar, plums, black currants, cedar, and underbrush is followed by a sweet entry, with medium to full body, excellent ripeness, and mature tannin. It is a classic, elegant Latour with more meaty, vegetable-like flavours than are found in a riper year, such as 1989 and 1990. The 1988 has just begun to enter its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for 25 years. Anticipated maturity: now-2025" Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 2000.

Nebbiolo D'Alba, 1988

Terre del Barolo - MAGNUM 1,5 litre -

The Nebbiolo d'Alba has a lovely earthy bouquet. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Chateau Margaux, 1986

Margaux Premiere Grand Cru Classe

96 points - Parker
96 points - Wine Journal

"The 1986 Margaux continues to be the most powerful, tannic, and muscular Margaux made in decades. One wonders if the 1928 or 1945 had as much power and depth as the 1986? The black/ruby/purple color reveals no sign of age. The reluctant nose offers up aromas of smoky, toasty new oak and black currants, as well as a few flowers. The wine is mammoth, with extraordinary extract, superb balance, and a frightfully tannic finish. This is a Margaux of immense stature, made in a masculine, full-bodied style that is in complete contrast to the 1990. It should prove nearly immortal in terms of aging potential, but will it have the awesome potential I first predicted? Anticipated maturity: 2000-2050.

Graham's Port, 1986

Malvedos Vintage Port

In declared Vintage years the wines of Malvedos form the fundamental part of the blend which makes up Grahams Vintage Ports. In many other years when there is not enough top quality wine for Grahams to declare a Vintage, the wine of Malvedos is nevertheless so fine that it is bottled on its own, unblended, when two years old and left to mature in bottle like other Vintage Ports. Unlike declared Vintages, Malvedos Vintage Port is normally only shipped when ready for drinking by which time it is usually at least ten years old, although it continues to improve for many years more.

Chateau Margaux, 1984

Margaux, 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 93-95 Points - Wine Journal ***

"A sensational bottle that simply defied every rule about Bordeaux. Intense liquorish, cherry liqueur nose: very rich. Thick exotic, rounded palate with super-ripe Merlot. Reminds me of a Petrus! Very complex with spicy, fleshy finish. This bottle is high-toned, succulent and quite delicious. Beyond my wildest expectations. " Neil Martin, Wine Journal 2004

Dolcetto d'Alba, 1982

Sale

Aldo Conterno - Cascina Favot
Clearance Offer | Last One | was £59 | Now £25

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

Chateau Latour, 1980

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

The wine of Latour is an example of regularity, no matter the quality of the vintage. Firm, tannic and concentrated in its youth, it requires a long aging to reveal all its potential, its power and extraordinary wealth. Perfectly ripe grapes produce a very impressive wine with an incredible bouquet of cassis, hazelnut and leather. A monumental wine.

Fonseca Port, 1980

Vintage Port

Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. It excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavours. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age. The 1980 is very good, possibly excellent". Robert Parker, Wine Buying Guide 1989 Parker

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1979

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe, in neck, good label

From the famously tannic 1979 vintage, this Lafite is proving the more dismissive critics from earlier days wrong as it settles harmoniously into maturity with plenty of life and complexity remaining. At K&L, we are champions of great wines from lesser vintages, and here is a perfectly mature First Growth from a lesser vintage that may not be out of reach in price. Fans of classic wines from the Left Bank with preferences that favor the leathery and refined end of the spectrum will find much to appreciate here.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1979

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

Rating: 96 - Wine Spectator
Château Mouton Rothschild's 1979 label was designed by the Japanese abstract painter Hisao Domoto.

The wine has an attractively brilliant, red-orange color and a nose that opens slowly to reveal notes of cedarwoord, spice, pepper and black berry fruit with airing. Relatively refined on the palate, it shows good structure, delicate and not overly powerful, with supple, silky tannins. Spice, caramel, earth and leather complete the pleasant impression in the mouth, combining subtle flavors with an agreeable structure. The finish is typical of the vintage, not particularly long but quite expressive.

Chateau Margaux, 1970

Margaux, 1er Grand Cru Classe (High Shoulder)

Michael Broadbent: "A big wine, but unsurprisingly, much more approachable than the Latour...The two most useful notes, and the most recent, once again made at Wagner's verticals, first in 1997, the second three years later. Almost identical notes. Now medium deep, a lovely colour; nose low-keyed but harmonious, sweet, good fruit, slow to open up; medium sweetness and body, rich, good fruit, grip and balance, its sustaining tannins and acidity under control. Last tasted November 2000. 4 stars. Drink or keep." (Michael Broadbent's Vintage Wine, pg 79)
