Chateau Batailley, 1995

Pauillac 5eme Cru Classe

The 1995 Chateau Batailley has turned out well, displaying a dark ruby/purple color, and aromas of minerals, black currants, and smoky new oak. In the mouth, it is a medium-weight, backward, well-delineated Pauillac with plenty of tannin, and a true vin de garde style.

1995 Tenuta Marchesi Antinori - Riserva is characterised by the wines rich ruby red colour that turns to garnet with time. Aromas of red and black cherry entwined, with notes of wild herbs, mint and a hint of earthy spice. It is supported by a racy acidity, mellow tannins and a long persistent finish.
Chianti, situated in Tuscany in central Italy, is home to probably the best-known and most iconic of all Italian wines. The area’s most highly regarded wines come from the Chianti Classico zone which is the heartland of the Chianti wine region – its traditional and longest-established vinicultural area.

Chateau Latour, 1994

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

This is an interesting as well as great vintage for Latour. As indicated in my barrel tasting report, Latour's 1994 possesses an atypically high percentage of Merlot (27%) in the final blend. Because of this, the wine appears to have a sweeter, more fleshy texture than is typical for a young Latour, but do not make the mistake of thinking this will be a commercially-styled, easy to drink wine. It exhibits an opaque dark ruby/purple color, and a backward, intense textbook nose of walnut and cassis scents complemented by smoky pain grille notes that build in the glass. This full-bodied, powerful, layered Latour reveals high tannin, but no bitterness or astringency.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1994

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 91 Points - Robert Parker ***

The 1994 appears to be the finest Mouton-Rothschild made following the 1986 and before the 1995's conception. The wine exhibits a dense, saturated purple color, followed by a classic Mouton nose of sweet black fruits intermingled with smoke, pain grillee, spice, and cedar. Medium to full-bodied, with outstanding concentration, a layered feel, plenty of tannin, and rich, concentrated fruit, this wine is similar to the fine 1988. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025. By the way, the Dutch artist, Appel, has created a gorgeous label for the 1994. Although Mouton-Rothschild can be among the most inconsistent first-growths,

Chateau Latour, 1993

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

A terrific wine for the vintage, Latour's 1993 reveals an opaque purple color, a backward, cedar, black walnut, cassis, and earth-scented nose, medium to full body, gorgeously rich, concentrated fruit, moderately high tannin (but no astringency), and a sweet, long, powerful finish. The wine does not possess any of the vegetal, green pepper characteristics of the vintage, nor any hint of hollowness or harshness. This wine may prove to merit an even higher rating. Is this vintage the modern day clone of the 1967 and 1971?

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1993

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe level in neck, nick on label

*** 90 Points - Robert Parker ***
Reviews: " The 1993 is a beautifully made wine which could be considered a sleeper of the vintage. The wine boasts a dark purple color, followed by a sweet, pain grillee, roasted nut, and cassis-scented bouquet that is just beginning to open. In the mouth, the wine may not possess the body and volume of a vintage such as 1990 or 1989, but there is more richness of fruit, a sweet, ripe, pureness to the wine, as well as medium body and outstanding balance. This moderately tannic, well-focused, surprisingly rich 1993 is capable of 15-20 years of evolution. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015.

Chateau Yquem, 1993

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe

A beautiful, slightly golden yellow, this wine is still very young to express much on the initial nose. After swirling, and even more so after a few minutes in the glass, there come scents of citrus, raisins and also more floral aromas with delicate lime flower. These are still early days and time is needed for these impressions to develop. In the mouth the great quality and potential are obvious. The attack is round, and the volume quickly fills the whole mouth. What sweetness and what pleasure - with just enough acidity. Flavours of mandarin, apricot, fruit paste, then the vanillary, lightly grilled notes associated with the long élevage in barrel.

1990 Crusted Port

Sale

Wine Society Bottling
Labels lightly bin soiled
Special Offer | was £119 | Now £89

A typical crusted port has a power complexity similar to a vintage port with sweet, rich, spicy red and black fruit harmoniously integrated. Crusted ports rather than a product from a single vintage are a blend from various years. Crusted is made in a similar way to vintage port however since this is a blend, the vintage year is not allowed to be prominent on the label. The vintage appearing on the label refers to the bottling date instead.

Domaine de Chevalier, 1990

Graves Pessac-Leogan

*** 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate ***

Tasted from a magnum purchased on release, the 1990 Domaine de Chevalier is a magnificent Pessac-Léognan, one that I was gobsmacked to find that I have never tasted before! It has one of those entrancing, tertiary, smoke and mushroom scented bouquets, secondary aromas that are beautifully defined and exude the essence of Pessac-Léognan. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, still plenty of black dusky fruit infused with pencil lead, tobacco and dried herbs such as rosemary and sage. The balance is delectable and it fans out beautifully on the finish.

Review:
Intense amber-tawny colour. Presents a complex and wonderfully elegant bouquet, standing-out the dried fruits, the vanilla and the involving roasting nuances. In the mouth it is dense and large, but at the same time, it is soft and delicate. Reveals a strong complexity and an amazing balance.

Chateau Latour, 1988

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

91 points - Robert Parker
92 Points - Wine journal

"The best showing yet for a wine from this under-rated vintage, the dark garnet-coloured 1988 Latour reveals slight amber at the edge. A bouquet of melted tar, plums, black currants, cedar, and underbrush is followed by a sweet entry, with medium to full body, excellent ripeness, and mature tannin. It is a classic, elegant Latour with more meaty, vegetable-like flavours than are found in a riper year, such as 1989 and 1990. The 1988 has just begun to enter its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for 25 years. Anticipated maturity: now-2025" Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 2000.

Chateau Margaux, 1986

Margaux Premiere Grand Cru Classe

96 points - Parker
96 points - Wine Journal

"The 1986 Margaux continues to be the most powerful, tannic, and muscular Margaux made in decades. One wonders if the 1928 or 1945 had as much power and depth as the 1986? The black/ruby/purple color reveals no sign of age. The reluctant nose offers up aromas of smoky, toasty new oak and black currants, as well as a few flowers. The wine is mammoth, with extraordinary extract, superb balance, and a frightfully tannic finish. This is a Margaux of immense stature, made in a masculine, full-bodied style that is in complete contrast to the 1990. It should prove nearly immortal in terms of aging potential, but will it have the awesome potential I first predicted? Anticipated maturity: 2000-2050.
