Cavendish port (South Africa), 1949

South Africa, Port, 30 years in oak.

South African fortified red wines have a long and distinguished history dating from the early 19th century, not long after the creation of modern Port in Portugal. As the Portuguese port industry obtained an embargo on calling anything 'port' not emanating from Portugal, this fortified wine from the Cape has to be called 'Vin de Liqueur'. Today many of the fortified red producers, concentrated around Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo, use Portuguese varietals and make wines that compete in quality with similar wines made in Portugal.

As can be seen on the label, the text relates "The wine of a single outstanding vintage in the Cape, which has been late bottled in this country after over 30 years maturation in oak wood".

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1948

Pauillac Grand Cru Classe

Mature mahogany colour, a little cloudy. Plenty of glycerine, unctuous and creamy port like texture, but without the sweetness, which one could expect given that 1948 wasn’t a very ripe vintage. It kept getting better in the glass.

Taylor's Port, 1948

Vintage Port (Army & Navy labelled, top shoulder)

From the very good 1948 vintage, this very rare Taylors vintage port is one of the finest ports ever made

This is one of the finest ports I have ever tasted! The 1948 Taylor strong tawny colour. On the nose there was a wonderful coffee, chocolate and tobacco with an alluring herbal aroma. On the palate this port has a luscious mouth-feel and a layered incredibly complex layers of caramel, chocolate and coffee. This continued with an incredible log persistent finish. VWP tasting March 2017

Sherry, 1946

Bodegas Toro Albaia Don PX Convento Seleccion, Montilla
In own case with tasting vial.

100 Points - Wine advocate
Reviews:
The 1946 Don PX Convento Seleccion produced with Pedro Ximenez grapes dehydrated under the sun at the time of the Second World War, was only bottled in September 2011. This is an extreme wine, my first descriptor was ultra-mega-super concentrated. It is unbelievably powerful, both in the nose and the palate, full of umami, with sweet cinnamon, Christmas cake, camphor, petrol, lemongrass, Belgian chocolate and butter. Incredibly complex and rich, sweet, balanced and smooth in the palate, it is both very sweet and somehow salty, and with time it develops a black olive note.

Niepoort Port, 1945

Vintage Port

A rare example of the Niepoort 1945 Vintage.

Rated 97 points from the Wine Spectator (in 1990)… 'Another Port shipper once mistook this extraordinary wine for one 15 years younger. It is very youthful, with caressing sweet fruit flavors. Medium garnet with a ruby center, blackberry, black pepper and smoke aromas, medium-bodied, with sweet blackberry.'

Voted as the best of the Niepoort vintages by thePortForum.com - Review: 60% opaque, red. Wonderful mature VP, still with structure. Mint and cherry, though fruit fading. Fabulous. Widely acclaimed, and overwhelmingly voted, wine of the ni

Richebourg, 1945

Grand Cru, Vosne-Romanée

Richebourg is one of the six grand cru sites in the hallowed village of Vosne-Romanée, in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits. It is one of the larger sites in the village, and is famous for its full-bodied, muscular style of Pinot Noir. Richebourg wines are in fact some of the most opulent from Vosne-Romanée, exhibiting earthy characters along with dense fruit, and they are capable of being cellared for many years.

Chateau Latour, 1944

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

Established around 1680, the Chateau Latour estate is one of the oldest of the Medoc. At the heart of the estate, the principal parcel named "L'Enclos" is 47 hectares of the oldest vines that are preciously maintained because only they are able to give birth to the "Grand Vin". The wine of Chateau Latour is an example of consistent excellence, no matter the vintage. Firm, tannic and concentrated in its youth, it needs a long cellaring to reveal all of its profoundness, strength and extraordinary richness. At perfect maturity, the wine distinguishes itself by an incredible bouquet of black currant, hazelnut and leather.

Barros Port, 1937

Colheita Port

This is a Colheita Port of exceptional quality and elegance. Barros make their colheita ports from a single harvest. These "Vintage Tawny" ports are aged in small 550-litre oak barrels in the Vila Nova de Gaia Cellars. It is bottled at least seven years after ageing.

Dark maple colour with an amber tinge. Notes of leather, cedar and crème brûlée revealed a sublime nose as this continued to evolve in glass. Rich and soft with a sexy elegance, the Burmester showed a sweet and full-bodied style which was better on the palate. By the time I reached the end of my glass, this ‘37 had fully assuaged any concerns I had initially.
