The 2018 Quinta do Vesuvio is one of my top Port wines of the 2018 vintage. Flamboyant, full of concentration lovely violet nose and absolutely loaded with red fruit at this early stage. Tannins are finely resolved and should provide the structure for the wine to develop. Only 965 cases made so will be in short supply 95/100. TC VWP June 2020

Maynard's Port, 2017

Vintage Port
Single Bottle (1x75cl)

Made from Organically grown grapes and presented in a beautiful, traditional bottle. And what was inside the bottle didn't disappoint. Indeed, it far exceeded our expectations. It has an intense perfume, silky and fresh with a drier style, with wonderful purity of fruit.

As the wine ages it softens and slowly sheds its deep dark colour, gaining in structure and complexity. As Vintage Port throws a natural 'crust' or sediment in the bottle, it should be stood upright for 24 hours and decanted carefully before serving.

Christian Seely (MD Noval) believes the 2017s "to be exceptional":

“I consider these wines to be among the best that I have known during my time at Quinta do Noval. The decision to declare them was a very easy one. As is well known, at Quinta do Noval, we do not hesitate to make small declarations of our Vintage Ports even in years which are not being generally declared, provided that the quality is excellent. But the 2017 is clearly an exceptional year which I believe will be remembered as one of the historic Vintage Port declarations of Quinta do Noval.

Tasting note
The Cockburn 2017 has resinous, forest floor aromas with bergamot notes mingling with rockrose scents.
Fresh, mineral notes are evocative of eucalyptus and anise. The palate is intense with layers of blueberry and kirsch flavours underpinned by peppery tannins which provide Cockburn’s signature grip. A very complete wine, complex and finely tuned that suggests impressive longevity.

Double Magnum (300cl) Single Bottle

Review Scores
*** 17.5/20 - Jancis ***
*** 94/100 - Vinous ***
*** 19/20 - Richard Mayson ***

Tasting Note
Dense inky core fading to a magenta rim. A seductive Croft nose, ripe and voluptuous but with the depth and density characteristic of the 2017 vintage. As usual, plump, juicy blackcurrant, black cherry and raspberry form the backdrop. However, the nose is soon drawn into a vortex of heady, complex aroma in which resiny scents of eucalyptus and gumcistus blend with pungent notes of sage and mint, fresh hints of grapefruit and a mellow spiciness. On the palate, firm, sinewy tannins are wrapped in a thick envelope of dense, velvety texture.

Tasting Notes
Croft has announced the release of the first Vintage Port made from the produce of the old, historic vineyard plots on the company’s flagship property, Quinta da Roêda. Named Serikos, a historical reference to the property’s involvement in the production of silk following the destruction of its vineyards by Phylloxera and to the silken quality of its wines, it will be made available on allocation in very limited quantities.

Tasting notes
It is rare to see such tremendous depth and intensity in colour as this wine displays. The freshness of the floral aromas is very attractive with a dominance of rockrose, a flower that grows wild around the hills of Senhora da Ribeira. On the palate, it is exceptionally full-bodied, rich and powerful with black fruit coming to the fore.

Tasting Note
A narrow magenta ring around a core of inky purple black. The nose opens with a burst of dark, woodland fruit, dense and succulent, blended with fresher, more vibrant red berry aromas. A slatey minerality holds this exuberant fruitiness in check. At this stage, the nose is still reserved and discreetly aromatic, revealing leafy, balsamic scents and cedary notes of sawn wood. The first impression on the palate, as on the nose, is of tightly packed, dense dark berry fruit, which then explodes on the mid-palate and surges into the long finish.

The wine is a truly outstanding example of the best that the Douro is capable of producing. Deep purple in colour and with a viscosity that signals a huge concentration, the aromas of blackberry, plum and bergamot leap out of the glass. On the palate there are layers of black fruit with fresh apricot highlights, and an amazingly long and persistent finish.
