Riesling, 1976

Guntrum Niersteiner Spielgelberg Trockenbeerenauslese (HALF BOTTLE 35cl)

Trockenbeerenauslese (literal meaning: "dried berries selection") is a German language wine term for a medium to full body dessert wine. This means that the grapes have been individually picked and are shrivelled with noble rot, often to the point of appearing like a raisin. They are therefore very sweet and have an intensely rich flavor, frequently with a lot of caramel and honey bouquet, stone fruit notes such as apricot, and distinctive aroma of the noble rot. The finest examples are made from the Riesling grape, as this retains plenty of acidity even at the extreme ripeness.
These are extremely rare wines and prices reflect the intense human labour as well as the rare climate conditions that lead to their production.

Chateau Yquem, 1975

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe

*** 98 Points - Exceptional Neil Martin ***

Reviews
"The 1975 Château d'Yquem stands as one of the towering successes of that decade and at 40 years of age, it shows no signs of losing any of its prowess. This bottle represented one of the best that I have encountered. Iridescent in color, the bouquet soars from the glass, a pyrotechnic display of quince, Clementine, honey and a touch of aszu, lending it a slight Tokaji-like personality. It is beautifully defined and intense. The palate is pure and detailed with a killer line of acidity, vibrant honeyed fruit and a mellifluous finish that is now fully expressive.

Fonseca Port, 1975

Vintage Port

This Port is now beginning to reach its full maturity and is ready for drinking. As it ages further, it will begin to develop gently into a more tawny style Port. This Port should probably be drunk over the next few years although it is still showing remarkable balance and finesse.

Fonseca Port, 1974

Guimaraens Vintage Port

A gem that outshines the vintage, this is a dense and delicious port wine that shows some raisin and prune on the nose with wood hints and alcohol. On the palate, forest notes chime in with the forward fruits of cherries and black currants. There is a lot of structure to this wine, and there were even hints of bitter chocolate and leather in the finish.

Valtellina, 1973

Coop. Villa Bianzone

Valtellina is one of Italy’s most dramatic wine regions, located in Lombardy, the vineyards are located on steep mountains.

The principal grape variety is Chiavennasca (the local name for Piedmont’s Nebbiolo and an Italian grape varietal that has been cultivated since medieval times here). The DOCG wines are generally comprised of at least 90% Chiavennasca and then blended with other quality local grapes like Brugnola, Rossola, Pignola. Then there is a DOC Valtellina Rosso (also called Rosso di Valtellina DOC) which requires at least 80% of the blend be Chiavennasca and does not have minimum ageing requirements.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1972

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

Wassily Kandinsky label

Reviews: Stands up well for a 72. This had a deep red-brown color that was consistent throughout. It showed an intense nose of fresh asparagus which carried into the palate where it was joined by notes of celery. This exceeded expectations and was surprising drinkable for the amount of greenness it had. The half-bottle leftover the next day lost a lot of the asparagus/celery notes, having them replaced by some bell pepper and hints of cabernet fruit (cassis). One for the collectors. 1971 Madeira

D'Oliveiras Sercial Madeira

Raisins, plums, walnuts and a hint of prunes are the aromas in this wonderful Madeira. The scent fills the room as soon as it is open. Pouring it into the glass you notice the crystal clear golden brown colour. You swirl and smell, noticing the raisins and the walnuts. You take a sip, the flavors of raisins and plums fills the front of your mouth, not too sweet. You swish and swallow, the walnuts taking over in the back of the mouth. The taste lingers…

Try this dry Madeira as the ultimate aperitif. Its fresh acidity opens your tatting buds, then you’re ready to go. The right choice for salads with vinaigrette and fresh starters, it pairs marvellously with almonds, goat’s cheese, sushi, avocado and olives.

Delaforce Vintage Port, 1970

VINTAGE PORT

The nose has a slightly tawny, baked-earth edge to it, with aromas of spiced cedar wood, parma violets and sweet roasted meats. It is fresher than the wine's appearance would suggest. And the palate certainly has flesh at the beginning, and continuing through the middle, with a fair amount of structure still evident as well. In truth there are some attractive, perfumed elements to the flavour here, but also a lot of grip, and a slightly hot aspect to it as well. The finish is long, but a touch hot and fierce again. This is certainly a wine worth experiencing.

Dow's Port, 1970

Vintage Port

Reviews:
Sweet, voluptuous bouquet. Coffee and cinnamon tastes. So beautifully balanced and elegant. Stunningly poised. A 1970 like this is sheer perfection and exactly what great, mature Vintage Port should be.
Serena Sutcliffe , CUISINE & WINE ASIA 2008 VOLUME 12
01/01/2008

“Exceptionally deep crimson with remarkably little evolution and few orangey hints. Very lively, even a hint of orange peel. Lots of concentration and life. Quite animal too. Very sweet and impressive with a great combination of richness and structure. This is serious wine with a serious future. Long and well balanced”.

Niepoort Port, 1970

Vintage Port

Rare dumpy bottle.

From the outstanding 1970 vintage. The excellent Niepoort is one of the smallest producers of port. Their ports are sought after by collectors and port lovers.

Reviews:
"Unbelievable bottle! So ridiculously dark. Coffee nose. Very young and dense. Seems surprisingly primary. Still some unresolved tannins. Long finish. With more time, there is an appealing confectionery aspect that emerges. I have had other bottles of this wine and they were more than ready to drink (and actually quite average). This particular bottle needs at least 10 more years of bottle age. Superb!.

Taylor's Port, 1970

Vintage Port

Robert Parker writes... "This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. Their tawnys are also among the very best, though somewhat expensive. The 1970 is fabulous, a broodingly dense-coloured port that has all the signs of future greatness." Parker Buyers Guide.
