Madeira, 1864

Ribeiro Real - Malvasia - bott. Barbeito

This is a rare and limited release of the 1864 Madeira from the family cellars. The bottles are in perfect condition. There is something ethereal about tasting such a rare vintage. The 1864 Malvasia is a rich, velvety smooth Malvasia with sweet caramel, chocolate orange and malted chocolate notes. Well judged balancing acidity teases out the finish and keeps the sweetness in check.
Try this luscious sweet and full-bodied Madeira with stewed meat dishes with sweet and spicy elements. It pars marvellously with intense and rich dark chocolate as well as nutty and caramel desserts. Why not serve at the very end of the meal with a blue cheese such as stilton or Roquefort.

Blandys Madeira, 1863

Malmsey Solera 1863 Madeira

Bottled by Edward Young and Co London.

Malmsey (also known as Malvasia) has its fermentation halted when its sugars are between 3.5 and 6.5° Baumé. This style of wine is characterised by its dark colour, rich texture, and coffee-caramel flavours. Like other Madeiras made from the noble grape varieties, the Malvasia grape used in Malmsey production has naturally high levels of acidity in the wine, which balances with the high sugar levels so the wines do not taste cloyingly sweet.

D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1862

Sercial - Madeira

*** 87 Points Neal Martin ***
The 1862 Sercial has a refined nose with just the right amount of oxidation along with touches of lanolin, walnut, pine needles and honeycomb. The palate does not quite match up to the nose. There is a slight fish scale note on the entry and it seems a little hollow, needing more substance to back up its rapier-like acidity. The finish offers tobacco, hazelnut and a touch of sour lemon. This was probably better 20 or 30 years ago. Drink it now. Neal Martin

Gomez Madeira, 1860

Boal Solera Luiz Gomes

Amazing vintage wine from the year 1860 same year that Abraham Lincoln was elected president in America and the year that the telephone was invented.

This old-styled Madeira, apparently delicate and almost fragile in its structure, gains a lot with age. In their youth they might appear more simple sometimes but age adds complexity and depth.

Shakespeare referred to the wine of the Madeira as precious essence, in his piece Henry IV.

Porto Valriz, 1858

Very Old Tawny (Single Harvest Port)
Coimbra de Mattos

This Port wine is one of the oldest available in the world! The wine was produced in 1858 by Domingos Ayres de Mattos (1829-1890) and kept in bottles in the cellar of his residence, “Casa de Cima”. Domingos’ son Antonio Ayres de Mattos (1879-1956), father of the current owners of this family owned business, was aware of the wine’s exceptional quality and (possibly motivated by sentimental reasons), wanted to leave the destiny of such a ‘treasure’ to his heirs. The wines were tasted in 1969 and again in 2013 for quality control. Almost the entire stock was found to be in perfect condition. In 2013 the owners decided to re-bottle and sell a small quantity of this exceptional port.

D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1850

Verdelho Madeira

*** 97 Points Wine Advocate ***

"The 1850 Verdelho remains an exquisite Madeira that is one of the finest ever produced in this, the founding year of the winery. It has a well-defined bouquet with seductive notes of fresh marmalade, quince, dried mango and melted candle wax. The palate is crisp and well-defined with superb acidity that is perfectly in tune with the spice-laden vestiges of decayed fruit. It is fresh and taut, performing impressively for its 162-years of age." The Wine Advocatey).

19.5/20 Verdelho 1850 Reserva
Colour: very dark mahogany brown, softened by golden shimmer.

Bolivar, 1824

Amontillado Viejisimo, Domecq

The House of Domecq has spent almost three centuries pleasing sherry-drinkers of every stripe, including the royalty of Spain and England. They have also grown, eventually becoming part of the enormous corporate tapestry that is Allied Domecq, which owns a diverse range of wine and spirit producers.

This Amontillado captures vestigial freshness from the flor yeast, which has been allowed to die, in return adding colour, texture and complex malty hazelnut flavours to an unnervingly complex ensemble.
