Chateauneuf du Pape, 1986

Chateau de Beaucastel Pierre Perrin

Château de Beaucastel has long been considered one of the great wines of France. It is unanimously renowned for its balance, elegance and ageing potential. Beaucastel has an extraordinary terroir at the Northern end of the appellation with heavy exposure to the Mistral. All 13 varieties of the appellation have been organically grown here since the sixties.

1986 was a good year for Rhone Wines and the Beaucastel has striking colour. The nose is profound and sweet, with black truffle, under-wood, and earthy notes. The mouth is fruity, fleshy and round, with soft tannins. It can be drunk but will improve with time.

Fonseca Port, 1986

Guimaraens Vintage Port

In undeclared vintages Fonseca bottle Guimaraens, provided the quality of the fruit is sufficient. This has a good depth of colour, with a moderate red-tawny hue. The nose has exotic notes of musky scent and spiced woods, together with some chocolate edged fruit. The palate has an impressive texture and sweetness immediately apparent on entry. Good fruit and a nice backbone of soft tannins. Elegant, with a touch of complexity, with balance, very much in the house style.

Chateau Prieure-Lichine, 1985

Margaux, 4th Growth Classification

This is the finest Prieure-Lichine produced in many a year. The property is now doing malolactic fermentation in barrel as well as micro-bullage (oxygination of its lees, which is practiced in some Burgundy and St.-Emilion cellars). Dark ruby/purple-coloured, with a sweet cassis/cherry and subtle toasty oak-scented nose, this medium-bodied effort possesses excellent concentration, low acidity, a plush, multi-layered texture, and fine length.

Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal, 1984

New

Pauillac 5th Growth Classification

This is well defined on the nose, fresh, smoke, blackberry, pain grille, very good lift. Touch of liquorice. The palate is full-bodied, sinewy, firm tannins, black fruits liquorice, a touch of white pepper, very elegant on the mid-palate, powerful at first pour and then ebbs away as if it has suddenly remembered its year of birth. But it has fine tannins and certainly a commendable wine for the vintage. The finish is simple, a little short, but with some attractive tarry notes on the aftertaste.

"A sensational bottle that simply defied every rule about Bordeaux. Intense liquorish, cherry liqueur nose: very rich. Thick exotic, rounded palate with super-ripe Merlot. Reminds me of a Petrus! Very complex with spicy, fleshy finish. This bottle is high-toned, succulent and quite delicious. Beyond my wildest expectations. " Neil Martin, Wine Journal 2004

Graham's Port, 1984

Quinta dos Malvedos Vintage Port

The 1984 still has some youth evident on the colour. A delightful, fruit-laden nose, which takes considerable time in the glass to open up. Macerated black fruits and figs, covered in a thin layer of chocolate. Rich, full bodied, but quite forward and fruit dominated on the palate. A lovely texture, quite creamy and sweet, to match this fruit. Some powerful tannins in the background, although these really do play a minor role, only showing on the finish.

Nebbiolo, 1984

Cantina Beccio e Viotti

The Nebbiolo has a lovely earthy bouquet. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Chateau Cheval Blanc, 1983

New

St Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classe (upper shoulder)

This is a beautifully expressive 1983 Cheval Blanc. An orange/rust color at the rim suggests fully maturity, which was confirmed by the extraordinarily intense aromatics of forest floor, mint, sweet raspberries, plums, and soy. Soft, round, medium to full-bodied, and just beginning to fade slightly in the finish, this wine offers a gorgeous, fully mature drinking experience, but it is time to consume it

D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1983

D'Oliveiras Boal Madeira

Madeira is a complex, interesting wine and is made in virtually every vintage. Due to the unique estufagem aging process Madeira is one of the longest-lived wines and also improves for days after opening, but will keep, once opened, for a month and more in a decanter.

Medium orange amber color with 1 millimeter clear meniscus; appealing, light coffee, almond, reminiscent of Moroccan bastilla on the nose with a hint of passion fruit; tight, silky textured, tasty, balanced, rounded, tart orange, tart passion fruit palate with a vague sense of light salt; long finish.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1983

Vintage Port

*** 90 Points - Robert Parker ***

Light red colour with just a touch of purple showing through. Warre has drier firm style, less show more workman-like but with elegance and what the Symingtons call “florals”. The style at 25 years is charming. It’s above all harmonious with a dried fruit and almonds undercurrent mixed with a pinch of cocoa and tea leaf. It has fine acidity and length with just the right bite in the back end.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1982

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** Robert Parker 100 points ***

This wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box. The creme de cassis, underlying floral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Chateau accomplished in 1982. The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity and vibrant in 2082! Thank God it is beginning to budge, as I would like to drink most of my supply before I kick the bucket.

Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou, 1981

St Julien, 2eme Growth Classification

Robert Parker writes...."One of the Medoc's more successful wines, the 1981 has reached full maturity. It exhibits a dark ruby/purple color, and a moderately attractive nose of minerals and jammy cranberry fruit intermixed with black currants. In the mouth, this wine has lost its baby fat, revealing medium body, and an elegant, measured personality. Pure, with well-integrated tannin, this is a stylish, graceful Ducru-Beaucaillou."
