Armagnac 1959 Vintage

Armagnac is a grape brandy from the Gascony region of South-Western France. Its closest relative is cognac, another grape brandy from an appellation located about 100 miles north of Armagnac. Armagnac even though it is related to and often confused with cognac, Armagnac is very different with regards to its grapes, terroir, distillation, élevage, blending, aromas, tastes and textures. In truth, France's two finest brandies made from wine are not very much alike at all.

Armagnac pre-dates cognac by about 150 years but never achieved the widespread sales figures that its relatives in the Charente obtained.

This historic house was founded in 1829 and had an excellent reputation for producing fine vintage ports until it was acquired and integrated into the Sandeman port house. The 1955 Butler Nephew has a mature tawny colour. The nose is still complex and enjoyable with herbal notes and molasses. The port is medium body on the palate with a medium plus finish - a very attractive and enjoyable old port.

Golden orange with a pale rim, 20%. Sweet nose of fragrant orange and hibiscus flowers - expressive and delicious. Later this became sweeter and more balanced. Lightweight on entry, with sweet golden sultanas. On the mid-palate and late palate there is more acidity that provides fragrance and balance. A touch of tannin shows as a hint of dryness on the palate; quite light overall. A huge aftertaste, then a big finish of green wood that lasts for ages. 93/100.

Tasting note: Color was dark amber and amazingly clear. For a wine of this age I thought it would be cloudy. Very pungent nose of burnt walnut, molasses and fig. Modest amount of VA that seemed both bitter and sweet. Much sweeter on the palate than the nose suggested. Again, hints of maple syrup, nut skin and fig. Very pleasant. As this sat in the glass, the bitterness and VA faded. A very interesting wine.
