Chateau Margaux, 2002

Margaux Premiere Grand Cru Classe

93 Points - Robert Parker
95 Points - Wine Journal

"Performing better from bottle than at any time in cask (which of course is the objective of great winemaking, isn’t it?), this wine reveals a dense ruby/purple color in a style somewhat reminiscent of the 1988 but with more power, concentration, and volume. It has a beautifully elegant nose of black fruits intermixed with truffle, flower, and oak. The wine is medium to full-bodied, dense, with wonderful precision, freshness, and a long, full-bodied finish with impressive levels of concentration. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 2005

"Very refined on the nose.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 2002

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 93 Points Robert Parker ***

"Dense purple to the rim, this wine exhibits the classic cassis aroma that is so characteristic of Mouton. Medium to full-bodied, tannic, powerful, and cut somewhat from the 1988 mold, this is a backward, chewy, well-endowed Mouton-Rothschild that will require considerable patience from those who purchase it. A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, the wine needs a good decade of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030+." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 2005

Margaux 2me cru Classe

*** 90 Points - Parker ***
*** 91 Points - Wine Journal ***

Reviews: "53% of the crop made it into this blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. An outstanding wine with a dark ruby/purple color and more power, richness, and concentration than its younger sibling, the 2002 reveals outstanding potential, exhibiting plenty of concentrated black currant fruit with some vanilla, herbs, and licorice. It has about the same level of tannin as the 2003, but seems to have sweeter fruit and more mid-palate and length. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2022" Parker, 2005

"Tasted blind at Farr’s 2002 Bordeaux tasting.

Dow's Port, 2002

Crusted Port (Bottled in 2002)

Vibrant and full of ripe red-berry fruit flavours balanced by rich black chocolate over tones, Dow's Crusted Port is superb value for money and gives many of the unique flavours of the great bottle matured Vintage Ports at a fraction of the price.

Crusted port is a blend of carefully selected young ports from two or three vintage years, bottled without any fining or filtration in the year indicated on the label. After many years of bottle ageing in ideal conditions in Graham's cellars in Oporto, it has developed the magnificent bouquet and flavour unique to bottle matured wines.

Crusted Port derives its name from the fact that, exactly like Vintage Port, it will throw a 'crust' or natural deposit as it matures in bottle.

Hermitage, 2002

Delas Domaine des Tourettes

The most famous of all the northern Rhône appellations, its 120 hectares produce tiny quantities of very long-lived reds. The vines were grown in Roman times, although local folklore claims their origins to be 600 years earlier. The wines are powerful, with a deep colour and firm tannins, and the potential to age for many decades.

Monferrato, 2002

Michele Chiarlo - Airone

Michele Chiarlo was born in the Monferrato region of Piemonte where his family has grown grapes for over 5 generations. In 1956 he decided to start a small winery in Calamandrana, a small village nestling in some of Monferrato's finest hillside vineyards. Armed with enthusiasm and an iron will, he worked hard to make the best wines possible. After many years his business finally started to expand. He now owns 50 hectares of vineyards situated in the most prestigious areas and produces top quality Barolos such as Cerequio and Cannubi and a wonderful Barbera d'Asti such as his cru "La Court". He has built a cellar in Barolo to age the wines.

Rosso Veneto, 2002

Maculan - Brentino

Brenta is the main river near Breganze, and is also the name for a wooden basket, worn like a backpack, that was traditionally used to transport grapes during harvest. This Bordeaux-inspired red is a blend of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon that Fausto Maculan has crafted into a quintessentially Italian wine. To ensure the perfect balance between fruitiness and softness, the wine is aged for one year, 50% of it in French barriques, and 50% in stainless steel tanks.

Marchesi Antinori

A smooth, well rounded wine offering sour cherry and raspberry notes with a medium finish. These wines can be forward and fruity while still exhibiting Chianti's characteristic rustic charm. Chianti, situated in Tuscany in central Italy, is home to probably the best-known and most iconic of all Italian wines. Valtellina, 2002

Casa Vinicola Triacca

Valtellina is one of Italy’s most dramatic wine regions, located in Lombardy, the vineyards are located on steep mountains. The principal grape variety is Chiavennasca (the local name for Piedmont’s Nebbiolo and an Italian grape varietal that has been cultivated since medieval times here). The DOCG wines are generally comprised of at least 90% Chiavennasca and then blended with other quality local grapes like Brugnola, Rossola, Pignola. Then there is a DOC Valtellina Rosso (also called Rosso di Valtellina DOC) which requires at least 80% of the blend be Chiavennasca and does not have minimum ageing requirements.

Warre's Port, 2002

Bottle Matured Late Bottle Vintage In Gift Box

The 2002 LBV from Warre's is still made in the traditional way - bottled unfiltered then aged for a number of years before being released only when it is ready. As a result, it is vastly superior to most other LBV Ports, and a brilliant value substitute for full Vintage Port.

The 2002 is full-bodied, rich and sweet; deep, dark fruit flavours; long, elegant finish.
Because it is unfiltered, this LBV should be decanted to leave the sediment behind.

This prolonged bottle ageing is crucial to the development of the superb “nose” and flavour which lend this Port a style and complexity very much akin to that of Vintage Port.

2001 Chateau Sociando Mallet

Medoc Cru Grand Bourgeois
Presented in Oak Gift Box

*** 93 Points Robert Parker ***

"This Haut-Medoc performed spectacularly on the two occasions I tasted it from bottle, even eclipsing its impressive showing from cask. It looks to be every bit as powerful as the 2000 ... not an easy achievement. A fabulous sleeper of the vintage, it tastes more like a first-growth than an unclassified offering. Its inky/blue/purple color is accompanied by a spectacular bouquet of lead pencil shavings, ink, blackberries, cedar, and earth. Full-bodied, with terrific texture, fabulous concentration, and moderately high tannin, this massive, atypical 2001 must be tasted to be believed.

Biondi Santi, 2001

Brunello di Montalcino "il greppo"

Exceptional vintage. Weather conditions at Greppo: January, February, March, April, May cold and wet; June, July and August dry and hot. September had replenishing rains at the beginning of the month. The harvest started in the second decade and was dry and cold. Grapes were mature rich in color extracts and acidity. We produced both the “Annata” and the “Riserva”. Only grapes that come from the Estate vineyards are vinified. Uncork and pour out a bit of wine from the bottles at least 8 hours before serving.

Chateau Branaire-Ducru, 2001

St Julien, 4th Growth Classification

First tasted in May 2002 out of barrel when it displayed a lush, spicy, ripe nose with a tang of orange peel. Another fine bottle in November 2003: a dense ripe nose with a touch of orange peel and anis. The palate displays fine concentration with good acidity, lots of tobacco and blackberry with a peppery finish. Very harmonious. Superb. Then at the IMW tasting in November 2005. I have always enjoyed this Branaire-Ducru since en primeur. A rich, opulent nose of sweet black fruits, orange zest and mocha, perhaps a little too open than I would like at this primordial stage. The palate is well-balanced with blackberry, mocha again and a touch of fresh fig.

Grand Cru Classe St Emilion

*** 92 Points Robert Parker ***

Made in a structured, tannic, restrained style (representative of the vintage’s overall personality), this medium to full-bodied 2001 exhibits scents of espresso roast, cedar, chocolate, black currants, and cherries. With sweet but noticeable tannin, exceptional multilayered flavors, and excellent texture, elegance as well as purity, it will be at its finest between 2005-2013.

Chateau Cissac, 2001

Medoc, Cru Bourgeois

The 2001 has a good rich colour - browning just a little at the rim. This bottle demands patience when opening as it needs time to develop. Good blackcurrant nose. Plum, damson on the palate with balancing blackcurrant acidity. Dusty tannins on the end palate at first but the tannin softened in the glass, even without food.
With food it is excellent. Rich fruit, good acidity, a good partner.
This is the beauty of decent Cru Bourgeois Bordeaux if stored well - it makes demands on the taster (patience and consideration). Not a wine from those who prefer to 'pop and pour' who miss out on most of the quality and character.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 2001

St Estephe, 2me Cru Classe

*** 93 Points Robert Parker ***

A beautiful effort, the 2001 Cos d’Estournel (65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot) exhibits a poised, noble bouquet of black currants, cedar, spice box, and licorice. A hint of truffles emerges as it sits in the glass. Medium-bodied with sweet fruit (mostly black) and nicely integrated wood, it builds incrementally in the mouth, ending with a 50-second finish. Drink this stylish, restrained yet substantial claret over the next 15+ years. Robert parker Wine Advocate
