2002 Chateau Giscours

Margaux, 3rd Growth Classification

The 2002 Giscours has a herbaceous, earthy nose with truffle notes intermixed with sweet cherries, plums, and currants are present in this soft, medium garnet wine. The wine is already evolved and best drunk over the next 10-15 years. The wine's plushness, and the concentration is very good.

Jancis 17.5/20
Dense, compact very Cabernet nose. Round and lively. Very brilliant fruit. Tannins on the finish. Quite a classical structure. Should age well. Pretty dry on the finish at the moment. But long. Giscours is no longer cheap, alas, though the quality has risen considerably.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 2002

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe,

An outstanding 2002 vintage Bordeaux wine from Chateau Lafite Rothschild.
*** 94 Points Robert Parker ***
*** 94 Points Wine Journal ***

Reviews:
"A brilliant offering and a candidate for wine of the vintage, this is classic Lafite that reminded me somewhat of the 1976, although the vintage conditions were completely different. This is a medium-weight, quintessentially elegant style of Lafite with notes of lead pencil shavings/graphite along with blackcurrants, plums, and crushed rocks/mineral. Wonderfully pure, dense, with a deep ruby/purple color and loads of fruit, definition, and a long finish,

Chateau Rauzan-Segla, 2002

Margaux 2me cru Classe

A 2002 vintage Bordeaux Wine from Chateau Rauzan-Segla.

*** 90 Points - Parker ***
*** 91 Points - Wine Journal ***

Reviews:
"53% of the crop made it into this blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. An outstanding wine with a dark ruby/purple color and more power, richness, and concentration than its younger sibling, the 2002 reveals outstanding potential, exhibiting plenty of concentrated black currant fruit with some vanilla, herbs, and licorice. It has about the same level of tannin as the 2003, but seems to have sweeter fruit and more mid-palate and length.

Dolcetto d'Alba, 2002

Sandrone Luciano

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

2001 Pocas Port, 2001

Colheita (Single Harvest) Port
Includes Pocas open Gift Box

This 2001 Port from Pocas has been rated as outstanding by wine critics.

This wood-aged Port is at a halfway point between the fruit of a young wine and the more woody, dried-fruit character of a mature Colheita. That makes for a wine that has some red fruits as well as raisins, with acidity both from the fruitiness and from the wood. Like any tawny Colheita, this wine is ready to drink.-91 pts Wine Enthusiast-

Amarone della Valpolicella, 2001

Tommasi

This wine is made from grapes harvested in various vineyards located on hills in the Valpolicella zone (Mezzane and Tregnago hills). Different sources and different grape varieties are important to obtain well-balanced wines with the fine structure that only a few single areas in the Valpolicella zone can provide. Notes: Color: strong ruby red. Clear and transparent. Bouquet: notes of vanilla and ethereal airs depending on the period of aging in the barrel; notes of sweet fruits such as currants, blueberries, cherries depending on the varieties of grapes. Flavor: wine with a velvety, raisiny character combined with the structure and typical stylish bitterness to give it good balance.

Assaje, 2001

Capichera - Rognedda

A 2001 vintage Italian wine. The Ragneddas have resided in the town of Arzachena in the Gallura zone of Capichera since the 19th century. Situated on the northeastern coast of the island of Sardegna, Gallura is known for its important history of viticulture; new research has revealed that it may have been the origin of wine cultivation in Europe millennia ago. However, over time, there hadn't been an established producer that was respected for its consistently high quality wines. That is until 1970, when the Ragnedda family decided to convert some of its pastures to vineyards and founded ‘Capichera’.

Barbaresco, 2001

Castello di Neive - Santo Stefano

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. Similar to its more famous sibling Barolo, Barbaresco is made from 100% Nebbiolo and shares its cult status as one of the finest wines in the world.

Biondi Santi, 2001

Brunello di Montalcino "il greppo"

A 2001 vintage Italian wine. This was an exceptional vintage. Weather conditions at Greppo: January, February, March, April, May cold and wet; June, July and August dry and hot. September had replenishing rains at the beginning of the month. The harvest started in the second decade and was dry and cold. Grapes were mature rich in colour extracts and acidity. We produced both the “Annata” and the “Riserva”. Only grapes that come from the Estate vineyards are vinified. One should Uncork and pour out a bit of wine from the bottles at least 8 hours before serving.

Chateau Branaire-Ducru, 2001

St Julien, 4th Growth Classification

A 2001 vintage Bordeaux wine. "First tasted in May 2002 out of barrel when it displayed a lush, spicy, ripe nose with a tang of orange peel. Another fine bottle in November 2003: a dense ripe nose with a touch of orange peel and anis. The palate displays fine concentration with good acidity, lots of tobacco and blackberry with a peppery finish. Very harmonious. Superb. Then at the IMW tasting in November 2005. I have always enjoyed this Branaire-Ducru since en primeur. A rich, opulent nose of sweet black fruits, orange zest and mocha, perhaps a little too open than I would like at this primordial stage.

*** 93 Points Robert Parker ***

wA beautiful effort, the 2001 Cos d’Estournel (65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot) exhibits a poised, noble bouquet of black currants, cedar, spice box, and liquorice. A hint of truffles emerges as it sits in the glass. Medium-bodied with sweet fruit (mostly black) and nicely integrated wood, it builds incrementally in the mouth, ending with a 50-second finish. Drink this stylish, restrained yet substantial claret over the next 15+ years.w Robert parker Wine Advocate

Chateau de la Riviere, 2001

Fronsac

A 2001 vintage Bordeaux Wine. This is a very mature Bordeaux. Fairly full bodied and creamy on the palate, plenty of tannins present though, showing some plum flavours. This excellent wine has a medium finish. Château de la Rivière, which takes its name from the adjoining Dordogne, has a rich history. Not only does the vineyard date back to medieval times, the Château was also embroiled in the numerous conflicts of the Hundred Years War. Charlemagne built a defensive fort here; the property was subsequently owned by the de l'Isle family, and in 1577 Gaston de l'Isle, the mayor of Bordeaux, built the château as it stands today.

Chateau Grand Puy Ducasse, 2001

Pauillac 5th Growth Classification

From the outstanding 2001 vintage Bordeaux Wine. A compact wine, but quite fruity for this rustic property. A good value.According to Robert Parker: "Elegant, pleasant black currant aromas intermixed with cedar, spice, and oak emerge from this medium-bodied 2001 along with tell-tale cassis and cherry fruit. Soft tannin and low acidity suggest it should be drunk over the next 6-7 years." (06/04) According to the Wine Spectator: "This is a pleasing young red with blackberry, liquorice and vanilla character, medium body and a silky finish. A slightly forgotten château. Best after 2006." (03/04)
