Montepulciano, 2002

d'Abruzzo, Predella

Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own,

Morellino di Scansano, 2002

New

Castariva

This style of Sangiovese differs from its northern brethren due to the ripeness levels it can achieve in southern Tuscany. The result is a rounder and more savory style of wine. Regulations stipulate that at least 85% of the wine must be made from this variety, with the rest coming from other permitted Tuscan red grapes. Unlike many DOCGs, this wine does not require ageing and can be released in the March after the harvest, less than eight months later; logically, this wine is characterized by lively freshness and crisp character. Other traits come in the form of cherry, pomegranate, plum, leather, cedar and spice notes.

Barbaresco, 2001

Michele Chiarlo

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. Similar to its more famous sibling Barolo, Barbaresco is made from 100% Nebbiolo and shares its cult status as one of the finest wines in the world.

Barolo, 2001

New

Sobrero & Figli - Riserva Pernanno

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods with no problem at all.

Chateau Clerc Milon Rothschild, 2001

Pauillac 5th Growth Classification
New Stock Arriving Shortly - please allow 7-10 days for delivery

The 2001 Clerc Milon is undeniably a sleeper of the vintage, and an effort that may actually turn out better than the brilliant 2000. The blend has changed since I tasted it last year and is now 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. A roasted espresso character in the nose, along with melted chocolate, licorice, creme de cassis, and new oak jumps from the glass of this impressive, sweet, expansive, full-bodied Clerc Milon. This is impressive stuff, pure, dense chewy, and sexy. Wine Advocate #146, Apr 2003

Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou, 2001

St Julien 2me Cru Classe

A 2001 Bordeaux wine from Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou.

A quintessentially elegant effort, the 2001 offers notes of liquified minerals intermixed with raspberries and a hint of vanilla. This medium-bodied, moderately tannic, stylish wine recalls the excellent 1999 as well as the under-rated 1981. It is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc.

Chateau Haut Bailly, 2001

Graves Grand Cru Classe

** 92 Points (Outstanding ) Neil Martin ***

Reviews:
"Tasted at Berry Brother & Rudd’s vertical. The 2001 is more expressive and generous on the nose than the 2000 and for me, it exudes more Graves-like character thanks to the 65% Cabernet Sauvignon. There are scents of blackberry, pencil shaving, a touch of fresh black olive with tertiary aromas developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied but rounder, perhaps fatter than the previous vintage. Blackberry, graphite, a saline tang and touches of white pepper towards the finish that fans out nicely. Tasted October 2011.

Chateau Latour, 2001

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

Many regard Latour as the greatest of Bordeaux's Premier Crus. Their 2001 as been described as 'sensational', 'luscious' and 'exciting'. It's beautifully concentrated and impeccably balanced, with just the right amount of chewy tannin and fruit extraction, but with a slightly gentle level of acidity. Gobs of cassis and blackberry compote sit with smoky oak, mineral notes and a whiff of leather. Some regard it as the wine of the vintage.

Reviews: Tasted blind at the chateau, the 2001 continues to be an exceptional wine, one of the finest in the vintage. It has a wonderful, graphite-tinged nose that unfurls beautifully with blackberry and touch of dried orange peel with more noticeable cigar box aromas than I have noticed before.

Chateau Leoville Barton, 2001

St Julien 2eme Cru Classe

** 92 points - Robert Parker ***

Reviews"Consistent from bottle (I tasted it three times), this is an outstanding offering, although not quite at the prodigious level of the 2000. Civilized and approachable for a young Leoville-Barton, it exhibits a saturated plum/purple color along with classic Bordelais aromas of damp earth, creme de cassis, smoke, vanillin, and tobacco. Medium to full-bodied and rich, with high but well-integrated tannin, and a long, 40+ second finish, it should turn out to be a brilliant effort, and one of the stars of the Medoc. However, patience is essential. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020.

Churchill's Port

20 Year Old tawny port 50cl bottle

Churchill's 20 Years Old Tawny Port is an expression of Douro terroir, combined with delicate ageing in seasoned oak casks. The result of this combination is a port full of finesse that retains Churchill's characteristic fresh identity.

Compared to other Port Wine shippers, most of which were established around the turn of the18th/19th centuries, Churchill’s history is short. Johnny Graham founded Churchill’s, (named after his wife’s maiden name) in 1981, making it the first British port company to be established in fifty years. The grapes are hand-picked and processed into ancient granite lagares, where they are trodden by foot while fermentation naturally occurs.

Dolcetto d'Alba, 2001

Bric del Salto - Sottimano

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.
