Barbaresco, 2001

Michele Chiarlo

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. Similar to its more famous sibling Barolo, Barbaresco is made from 100% Nebbiolo and shares its cult status as one of the finest wines in the world.

A roasted espresso character in the nose, along with melted chocolate, licorice, creme de cassis, and new oak jumps from the glass of this impressive, sweet, expansive, full-bodied Clerc Milon. There are scents of blackberry, pencil shaving, a touch of fresh black olive with tertiary aromas developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied but rounder, perhaps fatter than the previous vintage. Blackberry, graphite, a saline tang and touches of white pepper towards the finish that fans out nicely. Many regard Latour as the greatest of Bordeaux's Premier Crus. Their 2001 as been described as 'sensational', 'luscious' and 'exciting'. It's beautifully concentrated and impeccably balanced, with just the right amount of chewy tannin and fruit extraction, but with a slightly gentle level of acidity. Gobs of cassis and blackberry compote sit with smoky oak, mineral notes and a whiff of leather. Some regard it as the wine of the vintage.

Reviews: Tasted blind at the chateau, the 2001 continues to be an exceptional wine, one of the finest in the vintage. It has a wonderful, graphite-tinged nose that unfurls beautifully with blackberry and touch of dried orange peel with more noticeable cigar box aromas than I have noticed before.

From the very good 2001 vintage the Fonseca Panascal vintage port offers a deep purple/black color. Lovely plump, typically Fonseca, voluptuous. Delicious pungent jammy fruit - compote of cherry and black plum. Rich and creamy. Powerful, aromatic, rich fresh fruit nose. Nice touch of cedar. Again wonderfully plump, luscious jammy fruit coming through on the mouth. Fleshy, rich, rounded. A hint of liquorice. Great, yet smooth, tannins. Good volume and balance. Nice long, succulent, lingering finish.

Located on the steep right bank of the Távora River, Panascal is one of the most highly reputed vineyards in the Douro Valley.
