Chateau Grand Puy Ducasse, 2001

Pauillac 5th Growth Classification

From the outstanding 2001 vintage - According to Robert Parker: "Elegant, pleasant black currant aromas intermixed with cedar, spice, and oak emerge from this medium-bodied 2001 along with tell-tale cassis and cherry fruit. Soft tannin and low acidity suggest it should be drunk over the next 6-7 years." (06/04) According to the Wine Spectator: "This is a pleasing young red with blackberry, licorice and vanilla character, medium body and a silky finish. A slightly forgotten château. Best after 2006." (03/04) K&L's notes - Compact wine, but quite fruity for this rustic property. A good value.

Chateau Marquis de Terme, 2001

Sale

Margaux, 4th Growth Classification
Special Offer | Was £69 | Now £45

A very tannic, structured wine with an opaque purple color and a sweet creme de cassis nose intermixed with damp earth, vanilla, and licorice, this relatively massive wine has mouth-searing levels of tannin, medium body, and a very backward style that will require considerable patience from its buyers.

Pauillac 2me Cru Classe

*** 93/100 - Robert Parker ***
A very successful effort for this vintage in the Medoc, this deep ruby/purple-colored Pauillac exhibits class/nobility/breed along with black currant liqueur, licorice, and incense notes. Sweet, expansive, fleshy, and medium to full-bodied, with good structure, ripe tannin, and a long, 30-35 second finish, it can be drunk now, but will be even better in 2-3 years; it will last for 12-15 years. I had this wine three separate times out of bottle, and it is performing significantly better than it did from cask.

Chateau de Beaucastel Pierre Perrin

**** 96/100 Robert Parker ****
*** 17/20 Jancis Robinson ***
*** 96/100 - The Rhone Report ***

Château de Beaucastel has long been considered one of the great wines of France. It is unanimously renowned for its balance, elegance and ageing potential. Beaucastel has an extraordinary terroir at the Northern end of the appellation with heavy exposure to the Mistral. All 13 varieties of the appellation have been organically grown here since the sixties.

*** 96/100 - The Rhone Report ***
"Still incredibly youthful and a touch reserved (especially when compared to the ?00), the 2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape still needs another 5 years to truly shine.

Diano d'Alba, 2001

Bricco Maiolica - Sori

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

Les Carmes Haut Brion, 2001

Pessac Leognan

A quintessentially elegant, finesse-styled Bordeaux with complex aromatics but a delicate palate, the 2001 Les Carmes does not possess the muscle and power exhibited by the 2000, but the aromatics are 90 point material. This dark ruby-colored, light to medium-bodied offering reveals notes of sealing wax intermixed with tobacco leaf, red and black currants, and a hint of beef broth. With excellent balance and an accessible style.

Lupicaia, 2001

G.A. Rossi di Medelona

**93 Points**

The 2001 Lupicaia, which uses the estate’s best Cabernet and Merlot, is an impenetrable ruby in color, and the powerful, expansive flavors of berry fruit, eucalyptus, and coconut, the dense and shapely palate, and the rich, sensual finish are the attributes of a wine of superior class and caliber.

Maremma Rosso, 2001

Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi di Elisabetta Greppetti

Fattoria Le Pupille is a Morellino di Scansano estate, run by the charismatic Elisabetta Geppetti who abandoned the university halls for the vineyards and the winery in the 1980s.

Along with Antinori’s legendary winemaker, the late Giacomo Tachis (creator of Sassicaia, Tignanello and Solaia, to name just three) and Elisabetta’s mentor, Fredi, Elisabetta embarked on a process of renewal and innovation at Le Pupille which led to the creation of Saffredi, to stand alongside their Morellino di Scansano and Morellino di Scansano Riserva.

First created in 1987, the blend has varied over the years,

Merlot, 2001

Merlot can also produce a delightful and intriguing pure varietal wine. While Merlot has a long history of use as a blending wine, pure Merlot wines have been relatively slow in gaining momentum in Italy. That too has changed and today some of the world’s best Merlot wines bear Italian labels. The Trentino wine is from well-positioned and carefully maintained hillside vineyards near the city of Trento in northeastern Italy.

Montepulciano, 2001

d'Abruzzo, Marina Cvetic - Masciarelli

Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own,

Nebbiolo D'Alba, 2001

Bricco Maiolica

The Nebbiolo d'Alba has a lovely earthy bouquet. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavoured wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 2001

Vintage Port

Q. Do Noval Director Christian Seeley

“Although we declared Quinta do Noval Nacional 2001 officially in 2003, we did not release the wine for sale at the time. Nacional is always a powerful concentrated wine, but in its youth the 2001 was extremely backward and quite closed up, dense and very tannic. Since we had just declared and released the 2000 Nacional, we decided to lay down the 250 cases of Nacional 2001 that were produced and keep them back for release at a later date.”

Quinta do Noval Port, 2001

Silval Vintage Port

The Quinta do Noval Silval Vintage Ports today offer wonderful value for money. This eccentric late release (the wine was bottled in 2003) was made entirely from grapes of Quinta do Silval, and selected high grade "A" vineyard in Cima Corgo, in the heart of the Douro Valley.

Note: The 2001 Silval is characterised by a very seductive bouquet, vibrant fruit and silky tannins, making this an unusually attractive and accessible young Vintage Port. It shares with our previous declarations of Silval the characteristics of smoothness, elegance, openness, and readiness to drink while relatively young, and at the same time retaining sufficient structure to age for many more years in bottle.

Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage Port, 2001

Vintage Port

The 2001 Quinta do Vesuvio is a very dark ruby colour. The Touriga Nacional’s tiny yields brought great concentration to the wine, while the Touriga Franca, due to the good weather during the harvest, achieved perfect ripening, creating wines of great elegance. The Tinta Barroca was very ripe at the time of picking, with a higher than average baumé, producing wines of excellent structure and ageing potential. The old plantings of Tinta Roriz had lower than normal yields in 2001, giving wines with a typical concentration of berry fruit aromas.
