2000 Fonseca Port, 2000

Vintage Port

*** 95 Points Robert Parker ***
*** 95 Points Wine Journal ***

Fonseca vintage ports are noted for their luscious fruitiness which develops great opulence and complexity with age. These are released only when a year produces outstanding wines with long term ageing potential. These classic vintage ports are a blend of wines from three distinctive vineyards, Cruzeiro, Santo Antonio and Panascal. Each of these contribute characteristics such as concentrated black fruit flavours with a firm tannic “grip”, opulent luscious fruitiness and dense velvety texture with flavour complexity and vibrancy of colour followed by a fine scented character and fresh acidity.

Barbera del Monferrato, 2000

New

Giulin - Acconero

Barbera del Monferrato is a wine of prestige, rich colors that refer generally to the ruby purple, just what clothes cardinals; the bouquet is ample and composite, with fruity notes of blackberry, cherry, strawberry and red fruit jam and spicy aromas reminiscent of cinnamon, vanilla, green pepper.

Barbera del Monferrato, 2000

Bricco Mondalino

This 2000 Barbera del Monferrato has a deep ruby hue and a bouquet of ripe plum and cherries, often piqued by a hint of black pepper. Barbera-based wines are known for retaining a balanced acidity even in warmer vintages, making them an ideal partner to tomato-based dishes. These wines are lower in tannin, making them more approachable in their early years. Barbera from Monferrato differs from that made in Asti or Alba in both its provenance and style. Where Alba and Asti produce strongly structured wines, their Monferrato equivalents are more aromatic and often a little less robust.

Cabernet Sauvignon (I), 2000

Vallarom

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every wine-growing country in the world. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedar wood.

Opulent red. Intense aromas of currants, cigar tobacco and berries. Full-bodied, with a solid core of silky tannins and a long finish. Well-made. (3/2003)

Another excellent Haut-Médoc with great colour and verve but no exaggeration of style. Sweet, chewy and with lots of potential. A wine that leaps out of the glass.

Chateau la Tour Figeac, 2000

St Emilion Grand Cru Bordeaux

Dark cherry core color, bricking at waist. All leather, graphite, cigar box and pencil shavings upon opening. Fleshy merlot texture, acidic balance, integrated tannins. With aeration, smoky and roasted fruits came to the fore - like charcoal filtered plums. Textbook 60/40 blend. As others have observed, this is squarely in its drinking window and showing really well. Cellar Tracker Review

Chateau Leoville Lascases, 2000

Clos du Marquis 2nd Wine of Leoville Lascases St Julien
Magnum Format.

*** 94 Points Wine Spectator ***
The nose shows loads of plum, spice and meat aromas, as well as hints of licorice. It's full-bodied, with firm, yet velvety textured tannins. It's big and rounded. If you can't afford Las Cases, try some of this. Some might call this a second wine, but it comes from a plot of vineyards not deemed worthy of Léoville Las Cases. So it's like its own estate. Best after 2009. 20,000 cases made. James Suckling, Wine Spectator 2003

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 2000

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

97 Points (Parker)

"The 2000 Mouton Rothschild is at its best with about 24-48 hours of decanting. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot, the wine offers a saturated ruby/purple color in addition to reticent but promising aromas of toast, coffee, licorice, creme de cassis, and roasted nuts. Dense, chewy, and backward, with tremendous purity and density in addition to obvious toasty oak, it is full-bodied, powerful, tannic, and backward. Twenty-four to 48 hours of aeration only hints at its ultimate potential. This blockbuster will be exceptionally long-lived. It is not as expressive as the other first-growth Medocs, but give it time.

Chateau Quinault l'Enclos, 2000

St Emilion Grand cru

From the excellent 2000 vintage and scoring an outstanding 94/100 Parker points.

Reviews: "Only the fourth vintage for proprietors Francoise and Alain Raynaud, this wine comes from an old vineyard (the vines are among the oldest in St.-Emilion) within the city of Libourne. A cutting edge vinification with cold maceration and aging sur lie, stirring of lees, and an obvious respect for the terroir and the goal of capturing the essence of a vineyard have all been lofty goals of the Raynauds. The powerful, multi-layered 2000 should rival 1998 as the finest Quinault produced. It boasts an opaque purple color as well as a gorgeous concoction of crushed blackberries,

Chateau Rouget, 2000

Pomerol

Wine Spectator: 92 Points
Very grapey, with violet, lilac and other flowers on the nose. This is full-bodied, with big, velvety tannins and a superripe, raisiny aftertaste. A full-throttle red from a chateau people forget about. Score range: 89-91

Wine Advocate: 90 Points
The finest Rouget since the mid-sixties (i.e., 1964), this dense plum/ruby-colored 2000 offers aromas and flavors of licorice, balsam wood, plums, black cherry liqueur, and raspberries presented in a full-bodied, plump, chewy format. The flamboyant aromatics are followed by an equally impressive, lush attack, but serious tannin appears in the finish of this meaty, full-bodied Pomerol.

Chateau Sociando Mallet, 2000

Medoc Cru Grand Bourgeois

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

This is a beautiful wine and certainly one of the great sleepers of the vintage. I originally predicted that this wine would be at full maturity between 2007 and 2028, but I would push that back by a good 4-5 years. Still inky/purple, with notes of acacia flowers intermixed with wet rocks, black currants, and blueberries, the wine is full-bodied, displays no real evidence of any oak, and offers up terrific concentration, texture, and length. Chateau Soutard, 2000

This was one of the smoothest, softest wines. This has a hauntingly elegant nose and when you drink it it feels like it evaporates in the mouth. The body and richness is there and it leaves a finish of 20-30 seconds which takes this wine to another level of complexity.
