Chateau La Lagune, 1998
Haut Medoc, 3rd Growth Classification
This is a very fine La Lagune. A deep garnet core with tawny rim, the nose straightlaced with cedar, smoke, a touch of cranberry and a little cracked black pepper. The palate is medium-bodied, dry and solid, firm and stoic. Good weight on the finish, and a lingering tobacco aftertaste. Drinking now.

Chateau la Tour de By, 1998

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1998
Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
***98 Parker Points***
In a less than perfect Medoc vintage, the 1998 Chateau Lafite has been spectacular since birth, putting on more weight and flesh over the last year. This opaque purple-coloured 1998 is close to perfection. The spectacular nose of lead pencil, smokey, mineral, and black currant fruit soars majestically from the glass. The wine is elegant yet profoundly rich, revealing the essence of Lafite's character. The tannin is sweet, and the wine is spectacularly layered yet never heavy. The finish is sweet, super-rich, yet impeccably balanced and long (50+ seconds).

Chateau Latour, 1998
Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
Many regard Latour as the greatest of Bordeaux's Premier Crus. The 1998 Chateau Latour is a refined, elegant offering with a dark ruby colour, sweet cassis fruit, attractive fat, surprisingly soft tannin, and a good finish. There is firmness and muscle in the background, but this is not an enormous or powerful Latour. However, it is very pure, with the vineyard's mineral/black fruit character presented in a medium-weight format.

Chateau Senejac, 1998

Chateau Yquem, 1998
Sauternes 1er Cru Classe
‘A beautiful, slightly golden yellow, this wine is still very young to express much on the initial nose. After swirling, and even more so after a few minutes in the glass, there come scents of citrus, raisins and also more floral aromas with delicate lime flower. These are still early days and time is needed for these impressions to develop. In the mouth the great quality and potential are obvious. The attack is round, and the volume quickly fills the whole mouth. What sweetness and what pleasure - with just enough acidity. Flavours of mandarin, apricot, fruit paste, then the vanillary, lightly grilled notes associated with the long élevage in barrel. …

Château La Nerthe
At over twenty years old, the '98 Chateau La Nerthe Chateauneuf du Pape showed a perfectly mature and refined bouquet of dried strawberries and dusty earth with cedar-cigar box, pine, hints of cooling menthol, and sweet herbs. On the palate, textures of pure silk ushered notes of plum, blueberry and ripe strawberry fruits, with hints of mint leaf and chocolate across the senses, guided by balanced acids and leaving just a hint of residual tannin. The finish was long and wonderfully fresh, even cooling to senses, displaying hints of plum, subtle ripe cherry and lingering florals. I don't see this improving, nor declining any time soon--simple settled in a perfect drinking window. …

Chateauneuf du Pape, 1998
Domaine Vieux Telegraphe La Crau
The 1998 Vieux Telegraphe La Crau invariably has a beautiful colour, an earthy nose, but one of freshness, lively and promising. One finds freshness in the mouth, nervy and lightly mentholated. At the same time, it is suave and rich on the finish. The tannins are supple and ripe with no dryness. The end of the tasting is very clean and woody, rich with a light liquorice taste.
With its structure and complexity this red wine will go well with game, lamb or risotto with wild mushrooms cooked in a red wine sauce.

Montepulciano, 1998
New
d'Abruzzo, Miglianico
Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own, …

Morellino di Scansano, 1998
New
Fratelli Mantellassi
This style of Sangiovese differs from its northern brethren due to the ripeness levels it can achieve in southern Tuscany. The result is a rounder and more savory style of wine. Regulations stipulate that at least 85% of the wine must be made from this variety, with the rest coming from other permitted Tuscan red grapes. Unlike many DOCGs, this wine does not require ageing and can be released in the March after the harvest, less than eight months later; logically, this wine is characterized by lively freshness and crisp character. Other traits come in the form of cherry, pomegranate, plum, leather, cedar and spice notes. …

Quinta do Passadouro, 1998
Quinta do Passadouro, Vintage Port
In the nose a lot of alcohol. It has a powerful nose but it’s not very complex. Liquorice, dark fruit, dark chocolate. There is also an amaretto cookie element coming through which is quite nice.
Taste: A creamy velvet texture. At the start a lot of freshness which is followed up very quickly with a lot of alcohol that attacks the palate. Dried fruit, some liquorice, and a really nice acidity.

Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage Port, 1998
Vintage Port
Tasting Note:
The Quinta do Vesuvio 1998 remains slightly muted on the nose with notes of small black cherries smoke and sage. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins the fruits having mellowed over the last few years less high-toned with attractive black olive notes inflecting the glossy black fruits. The finish is still a little broody with a smudge of alcohol denying it delineation. Drink now-2025. Tasted October 2011. Source: eRobertParker.com
