Chateau Margaux, 1998

Margaux 1er Grand Cru Classe

91 points Vinous
The 1998 Château Margaux is a vintage that I have not tasted for a decade. Now at 20 years old it has retained a deep garnet colour with very little ageing on the rim, in fact, one of the most youthful-looking 1998 Left Banks that I encountered. The nose is gorgeous: very well defined with black cherries, fresh fig, touches of sous-bois and leather. As I have noted before, what it does not offer is the floral element that is the signature of many other vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. It feels more mature on the palate than on the nose with secondary notes of sage, black pepper, irony notes and a touch of bell pepper.

Chateau Musar 1998 Red Wine is a great vintage with a blend of power, complexity and endless fruit. On the palate, this wine is full of ripe, black cherries and balanced, rich fruits and spices. This wine is perfectly harmonious and balanced and expresses the power of the 1997 vintage in the finest way.

Chateau Musar is often referred to as the Lafite of the Lebanon. Wine maker Gaston Hochar defied the odds producing a string of great wines during the Lebanon War.

Chateau Quinault l'Enclos, 1998

The 1998 still reveals an unmistakable similarity to the famed Pomerol, Lafleur. Kirsch liqueur, spice, and mineral notes are the hallmarks of this wine, which combines breed, power, and elegance. Supple tannin, a medium-bodied, plush texture, and fine purity characterize this delicious, complex, stylish St.-Emilion.

Chateauneuf du Pape, 1998

Font de Michelle Etienne Gonnet

94 points Robert Parker: This wine reveals an up-front, forward style, a dense ruby/purple color, and a gorgeous perfume of licorice, seaweed, black cherry liqueur, smoke, and truffles. Full-bodied, thick, and juicy, with a viscous texture, firm concentration, low acidity, and fabulous ripeness, it can be drunk now or cellared for another 15 years. (12/01)

Merlot, 1998

Casale del Giglio

Merlot can also produce a delightful and intriguing pure varietal wine. While Merlot has a long history of use as a blending wine, pure Merlot wines have been relatively slow in gaining momentum in Italy. That too has changed and today some of the world’s best Merlot wines bear Italian labels.

Nebbiolo D'Alba, 1998

Rabino

The Nebbiolo d'Alba has a lovely earthy bouquet. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavoured wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Quinta do Passadouro, 1998

Quinta do Passadouro, Vintage Port

In the nose: A lot of alcohol. It has a powerful nose but it’s not very complex. Liquorice, dark fruit, dark chocolate. There is also an amaretto cookie element coming through which is quite nice.
Taste: A creamy velvet texture. At the start a lot of freshness which is followed up very quickly with a lot of alcohol that attacks the palate. Dried fruit, some liquorice, and a really nice acidity.

Quinta do Vesuvio, 1998

Vintage Port

Tasting Note:

The Quinta do Vesuvio 1998 remains slightly muted on the nose with notes of small black cherries smoke and sage. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins the fruits having mellowed over the last few years less high-toned with attractive black olive notes inflecting the glossy black fruits. The finish is still a little broody with a smudge of alcohol denying it delineation. Drink now-2025. Tasted October 2011. Source: eRobertParker.com

Taittinger, 1998

Vintage Champagne Zao Wou-Ki Label

For his collaboration with Taittinger Champagne, Zao Wou-Ki takes us into a world which characterises his style of abstraction.

‘I paint what isn’t seen’ he said. ‘My paintings become unreadable. Still life and flowers no longer exist. I am attracted by marks which are imaginary, indecipherable’. Indecipherable maybe, but not unfathomable to those who allow themselves to be led into his mysterious abysses, sea beds, phantasmagorical grottos and skies, which are both calm and stormy, where the viewer is drawn into a feeling of complete physical freedom and weightlessness.

The bottle contains a Brut Millésimé 1998, made from Chardonnay (50 %) and Pinot Noir (50 %), taken from the best vintages.

Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac, 1997

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
50cl bottle ***BOX NOT INCLUDED***

The 1997 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyon was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1997

St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification

Deep ruby-red color. Perfumed, vibrant aromas of black cherry, cassis, leather and oak spice. Big, sweet and rich, with lush black cherry and black raspberry fruit already offering enticing inner-mouth flavor. Less oaky on the palate than on the nose. Just a hint of herbaceousness. Finishes subtle and quite long, with impressively even, ripe tannins but not quite the snap of the '96. A terrific effort for the vintage. Stephen Tanzer Vinous
