1998 Quinta do Noval, 1998

Silval Vintage Port
Special Offer | Was £59.95 | Now £44.95

From the very good 1998 port vintage, the Silval from Quinta do Noval is our best seller. Now 20+ years of age, the port has mellowed to give complexity, poise and elegance. Pure aromatic nose is really fresh with lovely definition and great purity of sweet blackberry and raspberry fruit. The palate is fresh and supple with lovely pure summer pudding fruit and some nice spicy structure. Nicely defined. With flavours of spiced, raisiny fruit, damson and black treacle, it's fair to say it has aged well and has picked up a few tricks over the years. Noval Silval 1998 has never been more ready.

Chateau Cissac, 1998

Medoc, Cru Bourgeois - damaged labels

Good colour, great legs and nose. Quite nice when opened. Perhaps a trace of liquorice and a hint of 'medicinal' character. After 3-4 hours - quite rich and aromatic with good cherry fruit and a touch of maraschino at the end. Tannins are soft and have integrated completely.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1998

St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification

*** 88 Points - Robert Parker ***

The nose is quite smoky and dusty, with a touch of green pepper. Very masculine, as is the palate that is foursquare, with dusty tannins, cigar box and blackberry leaf. It is very Saint Estephe with its earthy finish.

"Bottled in April, 2000, this elegant, stylish, graceful wine is an attractive, dark ruby/purple-colored effort with subtle notes of sweet oak, licorice, herbs, and black fruits. While not massive, it is medium-bodied and ripe, with sweet tannin. Forty-eight percent of the production was utilized in this blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot.

Chateau d'Armailhac, 1998

Pauillac, 5th Growth classification

An outstanding Pauillac from an estate that is on the rise. Tasting note by Robert Parker: "This is another Medoc 1998 that is revealing more mid palate, flesh, concentration, and sweeter tannin after bottling than it did during its elevage. This black/purple coloured claret exhibits sweet aromas of liquorice, incense, Asian spices, cedar, plums and black currents. Full bodied and sweet on the entry, with good acidity, definition, and ripe tannin. ." Bordeaux 6th Ed. Rating 89/100 (Excellent)

This is a very fine La Lagune. A deep garnet core with tawny rim, the nose straightlaced with cedar, smoke, a touch of cranberry and a little cracked black pepper. Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1998

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

***98 Parker Points***

In a less than perfect Medoc vintage, the 1998 Chateau Lafite has been spectacular since birth, putting on more weight and flesh over the last year. This opaque purple-coloured 1998 is close to perfection. The spectacular nose of lead pencil, smokey, mineral, and black currant fruit soars majestically from the glass. The wine is elegant yet profoundly rich, revealing the essence of Lafite's character. The tannin is sweet, and the wine is spectacularly layered yet never heavy. The finish is sweet, super-rich, yet impeccably balanced and long (50+ seconds).

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

The 1998 Chateau Latour is a refined, elegant offering with a dark ruby colour, sweet cassis fruit, attractive fat, surprisingly soft tannin, and a good finish. There is firmness and muscle in the background, but this is not an enormous or powerful Latour. However, it is very pure, with the vineyard's mineral/black fruit character presented in a medium-weight format.

Chateau Leoville Barton, 1998

St Julien 2eme Cru Classe

*** 91 Points Robert Parker ***

Reviews: "This opaque purple-colored, muscular, full-bodied, classically made St.-Julien displays impressive concentration, chewy, highly-extracted flavors of black fruits, iron, earth, and spicy wood, and a powerful mouth-feel. A pure, uncompromising, traditionally-styled wine, it is to be admired for its authenticity, class, and quality. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2035. Readers seeking classic, muscular, extremely long-lived Bordeaux should always keep this outstanding classified growth in mind. It continues to sell for a price well below its intrinsic value.

Chateau Milens, 1998

St Emilion Grand Cru

Rich and opulent nose full of toasty, spicy, jammy notes. On the palate the style is open and lush with a softly textured and polished feel although the tannins are surprisingly firm for a wine made by the man from Valandraud. The finish is slightly unbalanced costing the palate some of its effortless immediacy, good finish and great value.

Like many of its peers, the 1998 Mouton has filled out spectacularly. Now in the bottle, this opaque black/purple-colored offering has increased in stature, richness, and size. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc (57% of the production was utilized), it is an extremely powerful, super-concentrated wine offering notes of roasted espresso, creme de cassis, smoke, new saddle leather, graphite, and licorice. Ruby-red. Penetrating, minerally aromas of raspberry, redcurrant and cedary oak. Denser and more structured than the '99; with its firmer acidity, this is more classic claret. Very rich, sharply delineated wine that will require at least seven or eight years of bottle aging. (ST) (5/2001)

Laphoraig, 1998

New

12 Year old Single Malt The Whisky Castle Collection no 12.

A 12 year old Laphroaig distilled in 1998, matured in sherry butt #80017 and bottled in 2011 for Whisky Castle Ltd.

Laphroaig distillery is an Islay single malt Scotch whisky distillery. It is named for the area of land at the head of Loch Laphroaig on the south coast of the Isle of Islay. The meaning of the toponym is unknown, but a commonly suggested etymology includes the elements "lag" (Gaelic: hollow), "breid" (Norse: broad) and "vik" (Norse: bay), implying an original Gaelic form something like "Lag Bhròdhaig" (the hollow of Broadbay). The name may be related to a placename on the east coast of Islay, "Pròaig", again suggested as meaning "broad bay".
