Tasting Notes: The 1990 port from Palmer is light oak in colour with a light edge on the rim. Much elegance on the nose with citrus, walnuts, figs and a touch of dried fruit. Ryst-Dupeyon Armagnac, 1990

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
50cl bottle

The 1990 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyon was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

Baron de Sigognac, 1990

Armagnac
Includes Original Sigognac Wooden Box

The company behind this Armagnac owns one of the most important stocks of old vintages in the whole region. They are growers as well as distillers and specialise in sourcing and ageing old casks of Armagnac.

This 1990 vintage Armagnac is made from a blend of Baco and Ugni Blanc, the predominant grapes used in the production of Armagnac. The distillation takes place in a column still to an alcohol strength of about 54%. The spirit is then aged in local black oak casks. The alcohol content then reduces naturally to about 40% after about forty years.

The depth of colour and complexity of flavour increase all the time the spirit is aged in cask, the colour can range from pale straw to rich amber.

Cabernet, 1990

Quinta do Poço do Lobo

Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character, pronounced tannins and high acidity aged gracefully when kept in perfect condition at the winery for 20-40 years,

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1990

St Estephe, 2me Cru Classe

In contrast to the 1989, the 1990 is a spectacular wine, and, along with the 1986, 1982, and 1953, one of the four finest Cos d'Estournels made in the post-World War II era. Bruno Prats believes it is the finest wine he has ever made. In the most recent tasting, the 1990 was even better than in the past, charming me as well as other tasters with its flashy display of opulent Merlot (about 40% of the blend) mixed with ripe Cabernet Sauvignon. It was one of the more forward 1990s in the tasting, which no doubt accounted for its precocious showing. This super-concentrated wine possesses a roasted herb, sweet, jammy black fruit-scented nose, with noteworthy opulence and succulence.

Chateau Guiraud, 1990

Sauternes
91 Points - Parker
91 Points - Wine Spectator

This is a classic Sauternes with a great deal of sweetness, plenty of ripeness, and obvious aromas of toasty, smoky new oak. The wine exhibits finesse and complexity, a style of Sauternes that will have its admirers, particularly among those who like to drink these wines as an aperitif.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
A showy display of power, highly extracted, smoky, buttery, pineapple and orange-scented fruit, lavish quantities of toasty new oak, and unctuously thick, massive flavors and texture. This huge wine avoids being overbearing because of its adequate acidity. (4-1995).
91 / 100

Chateau Haut Brion, 1990

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe

The only non-Médoc estate to be included in the famous 1855 classification, Château Haut-Brion’s viticultural history can be traced back further than its Médoc first growth counterparts. Located in the bustling commercial suburb of Pessac, Haut-Brion was purchased by the American family Dillon in 1935 when it was in a considerably poor condition, the family invested greatly in the estate and today this property is one of the showpiece estates of Graves. At Haut-Brion wines are fermented in stainless steel vats, after which the wine will spend 22 months, sometimes more, in new oak barrels before being bottled unfiltered.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1990

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

Scintillating nose; absolutely gorgeous aromas of vanilla-smothered berries, violet, and a fine, earthy, truffly quality with hints of cedar, coffee and spice. Deep and deliciously inviting. The palate lets this stunning first impression down slightly, with slightly under-powered cherry and blackcurrant fruit. There's a background of sweet oak, and good freshness with balanced acidity and fine tannins.

Dow's Port, 1990

Crusted Port

Crusted Port is a very small category, named because of the 'crust' of sediment that it forms in the bottle.
Invented by the British-owned Port houses predominantly for the British Port drinker, it is intended to be a more economical alternative to Vintage or Late Bottled Vintage.

Crusted is a blend of several harvests, which are bottled without being filtered and laid down to mature like Vintage wines. Using this approach allows the manufacturer to use some of the lesser harvests but still produce a good rich full bodied wine at an economical price.

Usually a year is stated on the label which, because the wine was made from a blend of harvests, is the year in which the wine was bottled.

Taittinger, 1990

Vintage Champagne Corneille

For the Taittinger Collection, Corneille expresses his art using the two core values which were constant in his work from 1946 onwards: line and colour.

Figures are formed using gestures made in colour on a solid, or modulated, coloured background. Strangely-shaped birds, reminiscent of those found on bas-reliefs in Coptic monasteries or on the totem poles of Indian tribes, are depicted on a background which is painted in a green, similar to the vine leaves themselves. The birds are ready to take flight and break free from cages and barriers as universal messengers of joy - much like the wine contained within the bottle.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1989

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe

Scoring and incredible 95 Parker points - this wine is one of the stars of the 1989 vintage.

Reviews: "Consistently backward and dense, with enormous potential, this admirable wine will not be ready for prime time drinking for another 5-7 years. The color is not quite as opaque as the 1990's, but reveals more purple and no lightening at the edge. Hugely concentrated flavors have just begun to offer up a nose of cedar and creme de cassis. Powerful and muscular, with high tannin and superb concentration, this is Lynch Bages at its biggest and most beastly. However, everything is in balance for a stunning evolution.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1989

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 95 Points Wine Journal ***

Reviews"The Mouton ’89 is a lovely Pauillac that has reached its plateau of maturity. It has an engaging cedar-scented bouquet touches of cigar box, mint and a touch of Italian cooked meats. Very well defined, very “old school”. The palate is medium-bodied and very harmonious with grainy tannins. It continues the aromatic theme of cedar and tobacco, relatively foursquare compared to Pichon-Baron of Lynch Bages, with a slightly leafy finish that demonstrates great persistency. It is very “classic” in style, restrained, elegant and bearing similarities to Lafite.

Kopke Port, 1989

Vintage Port

A very rare bottle of Kopke VP. This is one of those noses where you can keep going back and finding things you think it smells like. I really like that. A bit punchy initially with it's alcohol, the finish is where this wine really shines. Starts off as fresh popcorn, turning hazelnuts and honey, then granola and brown sugar..... off into a 40-second long finish with various evolution in which I am sure different people would find different things. Truly delicious. This wine is very, very good. I love it when a wine forces you to think about it, and this does just that. Captivating, complex, intense and delicious.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1988

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe,

1988 produced richly coloured Cabernet and Merlot wines, that are tannic and powerfully structured. A great vintage, gorgeously seductive and remains the most complex wine of this Century, the quintessence of Lafite-Rothschild.

This deeply colored wine exhibits the telltale Lafite bouquet of cedar, subtle herbs, dried pit fruits, minerals, and cassis. Extremely concentrated, with brillantly focused flavors and huge tannins, this backward yet impressively endowed Lsfite Rothschild may well turn out to be the wine of the vintage. Anticipated maturity:2000-2035
