Chateau Filhot, 1983
New
Sauternes 2eme Cru Classe
Chateau Filhot is an old and large estate. When Henri de Vaucelles took control of the estate in 1974 he began the process of replanting the vineyards and renovating the winery. It is during this transition that this bottle from 1983 was produced.
This is an interesting Sauternes to taste. The colour and texture of the wine is young but the flavours are very mature, having become primarily that of spiced apple and orange peel.

Chateau La Lagune, 1983
Haut Medoc, 3rd Growth Classification
Continuing to develop gracefully, the 1983 La Lagune is close to full maturity. The colour remains a healthy dark ruby. The nose offers up those aromatic, plummy, roasted nut, black-cherry scents that remind me of a red burgundy. Soft, round, expansive flavours reveal fine richness and depth, and the low acidity and moderate tannins give the wine definition and uplift. The finish is long, crisp, and exuberant. Wine Advocate #88
Parker Rating 88/100 (excellent)

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1983
Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
***94 Points - Robert Parker***
Reviews:
"Finally, the 1983 Lafite is beginning to shed its tannin. The wine exhibits a deep ruby/garnet color with only a slight lightening at the edge. The intoxicatingly perfumed nose of lead pencil, pain grille, red and black fruits, minerals, and roasted herbs is provocative. In the mouth, this wine displays considerable body for a Lafite, plenty of power, and a fleshy, rich, sweet mid-palate. Long, elegant, plump, and surprisingly fleshy, this outstanding example of Lafite seems largely forgotten given the number of high quality vintages during the golden decade of the eighties. …

Chateau Latour, 1983
Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
1983 Chateau Latour
90 points Vinous
The 1983 Latour is a delightful surprise. It is a vintage that I had not seen for a few years, and I had just two vague recollections of an ordinary First Growth; this was far superior and unquestionably the best bottle I have encountered. Modest bricking on the rim. The harmonious bouquet is fragrant and well defined, demonstrating a little leafiness with hints of leather. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and a touch more fruit than I would have predicted, and laced with tobacco and pencil lead. Previously I lamented that the 1983 lacks vigor and vivacity. …

Chateau Malescot St-Exupery, 1983
Margaux 3me Cru Classe
Deep garnet hue turning mahogany. A ripe nose: raspberry, cooked meat and leather. Quite intense though it tails off in the glass. The palate is better than expected. Medium-bodied, nice balance though lacking any Margaux typicity, (this more like a Saint Julien.) Irony. Pretty yet simple. Clean finish though herbaceous. To my great surprise, the wine improved the following day, becoming more harmonious and cohesive. Perhaps decanting and letting this wine rest is advisable.

Reviews
"As I have noted consistently, this can be a breathtaking wine, but having tasted it close to a dozen times since the last edition of this book, over half the bottles were marred by tainted corks. In fact, one would almost wonder if there was TCA problem in part of the wine storage area. The percentage of corked half-bottles is even higher than in the regular format. However, when clean this 1983, which has seemingly reached full maturity far faster than I would have guessed a mere four years ago, has a dense, murky plum/purple color and a gorgeous nose of smoked herbs, …

Chateau Rieussec, 1983

The 1983 Chateau Rieussec and one of many decent wines produced in Bordeaux in this year. Colour rusty, deep gold. A beguiling bouquet of apricot, honey, molasses, old English Christmas cake, toffee and smoke. A beautiful texture in the mouth, weighty, viscous and satiny. Very rich, toffee, honey, treacle and poached pears and apricots. Very ripe but with sufficient acidity to hold it all together. Complex and multi-layered.
