Dow's

dow-vintage-portFor over 200 years, the name Dow has been associated with fine Port from the Upper Douro Valley. Dow’s are known for their superbly concentrated wines; intense and tannic when young, maturing to a superlative racy elegance with violet and mint aromas. Their distinctive drier finish is the hallmark of Dow’s Port wines. James Suckling of Wine Spectator tasted a Dow’s port over a hundred years after its bottling, an 1896, and described it as: “…an amazing ruby colour with a garnet edge, it smelled of raisins, black pepper and berries. It was full-bodied, with masses of fruit intertwined with layers of velvety tannins. It was superb.”

The story of this House is unusual – rather than a British merchant journeying to Oporto, it was Bruno da Silva who travelled from Oporto to London. Importing wine from his home country, he was quickly accepted into London society and gained a fine reputation for his wines. With the outbreak of the Napoleonic wars, many merchants ceased shipping rather than coming under fire in the Bay of Biscay, but da Silva obtained Royal permission to arm his ships. Securing safe passage, his became the first and only port shipper to use its own armed protection for transport across the Bay. In 1877, his company merged with Dow & Co. With the merger, it was decided to keep the brand name as ‘DOW’S’, the name remaining to this day.

Dow's owns the Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira vineyards and, using these, even on undeclared years produces some truly superb Single Quinta port wines.

Quinta de Senhora da Ribeira Vintage Port
150cl Magnum Bottles

Charles Symington, fourth generation winemaker, commented, “when reviewing the top wines from 2019, we felt that the best expression of our grape varieties came from our six principal quintas. These estate wines are always the starting point from which we judge the year’s Vintage Port potential and, from there, decide what to bottle. In 2019, the various plots of vineyards within each of these estates delivered small volumes of wine with fantastic depth and complexity. We believe these wines could not have been enhanced by blending across each of our port houses’ top quintas to produce a ‘classic’ Vintage Port.

Dow's, 2018

Senhora da Ribeira Vintage Port, DOC Douro
Single Bottle

The 2018 Quinta Senhora da Ribeira represents just 8% of the Quinta's production. It is more compact, a bit more standoffish compared to some of the other single quinta 2018s that I tasted. It gradually warms up, revealing marine notes, seaweed and oyster shells tincturing the black fruit. The palate is super-smooth on the entry with plush, saturated tannins, quite spicy and peppery with an assertive, structured finish that is quintessentially Dow's. Superb. 410 cases produced.

One of the classic Douro riverside quintas, Senhora da Ribeira was acquired by George Warre for Dow’s in 1890. Since then, Senhora da Ribeira has been a fundamental component of Dow’s Vintage Ports.

Dows 2017 Vintage Port Technical Sheets

Tasting notes
It is rare to see such tremendous depth and intensity in colour as this wine displays The freshness of the floral aromas is very attractive with a dominance of rockrose, a flower that grows wild around the hills of Senhora da Ribeira. On the palate, it is exceptionally full-bodied, rich and powerful with black fruit coming to the fore. Gorgeous, ripe fruit is balanced by the fine tannin structure. On the finish, it is typically Dow, austere and somewhat drier than many other ports.

Dow's, 2016

Vintage Port, DOC Douro
***98 Points- Neal Martin, vinous.com***
***97 Points- Derek Smedley MW***
***19/20 Points- Richard Mayson***

This 2016 Vintage Port Wine from Dow's is the first wine where the mineral characters really shout to be heard. There are herbs too and dark plum fruit. It’s fresh and weighty in the mouth; a port of real authority.

Serving Suggestion:
When mature this port will need to be decanted to remove sediment. Serve at room temperature on its own or with vintage mature blue cheeses such as stilton, Cashel Blue, Roquefort, Gorgonzola and Saint Augur Blue. Vintage port is also good with chocolate - a flattering accompaniment to top quality hand-made chocolates and artisan chocolate bars.

Dow's, 2013

Quinta de Senhora Ribeira DOUBLE MAGNUM bottle
In original Gift Box

This 2013 Vintage Port Wine; Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira is set in the remote, hot and dry Douro Superior and commands a magnificent north bank position. Senhora da Ribeira’s wines are some of the finest in the Douro and they complement those from Bomfim in the composition of Dow’s classic Vintage Ports. The quinta’s high proportion of old vines (45% are over 25 years old) is of critical importance. The old vines are very low-yielding, producing on average less than 1Kg of grapes each, giving intense and concentrated musts which are ideal for classic Vintage Port.

Dow's, 2012

Senhora da Ribeira Vintage Port, Douro

Only 450 cases were produced at the Quinta’s specialist winery, where Dow’s Vintage Port has been made for over 120 years.

Exceptionally aromatic with aromas of violets, which is typical of Dow’s Vintage Ports coming from the south facing Touriga Franca vineyards, which in 2012 achieved perfect ripeness. There are also hints of blackberry, blackcurrant and black plum on the nose. Notes of Esteva (rock-rose) are also present, the result of the Touriga Nacional, which often expresses these scents. This is a vibrant wine, already quite complex and subtle. There is some spice from the relatively high proportion of Sousão.

Dow's, 2000

Vintage Port, Douro

**94 Points** Robert Parker
"An opaque blue/purple colour (typical of this vintage's top offerings) is followed by a strikingly provocative aromatic display (flowers, licorice, blackberries, and cassis). This firmly-structured, classic, tightly-knit, restrained port exhibits brilliant purity as well as impressive intensity. While not the most dramatic or flamboyant, it is a beautiful, classically structured port that will age gracefully. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2050." Robert Parker

Vintage Port
Special Library Release
** 97 Points Lisa perotti Brown - in Asia **
** 96 points Robert Parker **

The 1994 is one of Dow's finest Vintage Ports from the latter half of the twentieth century. It was widely praised by wine critics and writers shortly after its release, receiving consistently high ratings. For the second time since the original en primeur launch, the Symington family has decided to release a limited quantity from their maturing stocks in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. This wine has perfect provenance, having matured solely in the ideal conditions of the Dow vintage cellars, which are located near the Atlantic Ocean and benefit from the moderating maritime climate.

Vintage Port- MAGNUM
Presented in Dows Wooden Gift Case

Please note that this is a rare magnum format (1.5 L)
Medium cranberry red center and slight bricking on the edge. Intoxicating floral fragrance that filled the room, during its nine hour decant; accented by anise, plum and raspberry notes and a bit of spirit. Fresh, fleshy grape, dark cherry and fig flavors melded with underpinnings of licorice, chocolate and warming spirit. It's developing into a stunning middle-aged Port at 34 years of age, with little signs of nearing peak yet. Rich and multi-faceted, smooth and velvety ... even more so the second day it was opened. The acidity was near perfect and the tannins are tame but omnipresent; while the finish was spicy, warm and extremely long.

Dow's, 1975

Vintage Port
Damaged label

The 1975 Dows Vintage Port is from a vintage that has been long under-rated. I have had repeated tastings of the 75's and whilst not in the same class as the 66 or 70 vintages, nevertheless present an outstanding quality vs price buy. When you consider that recent releases retail around the £80-£90 mark and need 20 years of storage before drinking this represents a bargain. Decanted for 4 hours, the 1975 Dows is fully mature with a nice tawny colour. The recent bottles I have tasted have been very nicely developed and drinking perfectly now. Everything is very well integrated the fruit has mellowed to become a classic vintage port.
