  • Description

A luxurious aged Madeira, this rare 1.5L magnum of 1979 Blandy’s Bual is a collector’s treasure offering over four decades of barrel-aged opulence in an impressive format.

Madeira is one of the world’s most age-worthy wines, and few styles express its depth quite like Bual. Aged in seasoned oak casks in the warm attics of Funchal since 1979, this medium-rich Madeira has evolved into something extraordinary. Bottled in magnum – a rare and coveted format – it offers not just more wine, but more longevity and grandeur. Perfect for gifting, ageing, or sharing at milestone events.

    Tasting Notes:
This amber-gold Madeira reveals an inviting bouquet of toasted and crystallized dried fruits—figs, walnuts, and dates—interwoven with hints of confectionery and dried fruit cake. On the palate, it offers a balanced, round profile with moderate sweetness, leading to a long, fresh finish reminiscent of vanilla butter cookies.

    Serving Suggestions:
It is recommended to pull the cork at least 2 day before enjoying this wine. Decanting will help remove any deposit that may have occurred in bottle over time. This versatile Madeira pairs wonderfully with savoury dishes like pâtés and curries, as well as desserts such as caramelised oranges, fruitcake, and apple tarte tatin. Once opened, a Madeira wine should keep for many months without deteriorating.

    Cellarage
This wine should be stored upright in a dark room with constant temperature, ideally no higher than 16ºC.

Blandy's Madeira has been synonymous with quality Madeira wine for over 200 years. The Blandy's are unique in being the only family of all the original founders of the Madeira wine trade to still own and manage their own original wine company. The family has played a leading role in the development of Madeira wine throughout its long history and members of the family continue to live on Madeira, maintaining a tradition that goes back to 1811.

    Reviews

Wine Enthusiast: 93 points – "A medium-sweet Madeira, this is ripe, rich with an orange-zest aroma, and concentrated honey and spice flavors. Cut by the spirit and balanced, it is ready to drink."

Vinous (Neal Martin): 90 points – "Powerful on the nose... more oxidative in style, with grilled walnuts and a touch of cigar humidor. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth texture and fine acidity. It's harmonious with a deft touch of stem ginger, white pepper, and a tangy Seville orange marmalade on the finish."

Jancis Robinson (TC): 17.5 points – "Leather and chocolate browns, mace and nutmeg duskiness, and raisin mahoganies... chocolate orange, paprika spice, dried orange peel, candied citrus peel, blood orange."

Richard Mayson: 17.5 points – "The old wood aging shows well and strongly in this Madeira. It has an intense, medium-sweet richness and concentration, orange peel and tight spice going with acidity.
