Description

Small amounts of characterful dry, old, vintage-dated Amontillados and extremely old, vintage-dated sweet Pedro Ximénez are consistently released by Toro Albalá from the Montilla-Moriles appellation in eastern Spain. With the best and oldest vineyard holdings in Montilla, Toro Albalá is one of the premier producers of Pedro Ximenez today. As the first Montilla producer to bottle dessert-style Pedro Ximénez (in 1970), Toro Albalá is still the only expert in 100% vintage Pedro Ximénez.

Don PX are Toro Albala's signature wines. Each one of them is taken care of with exclusivity, from the harvest to the raisining, obtaining a unique personality.

This Gran Reserva 2002 is an elegant wine, elaborated with Pedro Ximénez grapes harvested in mid-August and laid under the sun for 7 to 9 days to concentrate all their sugars. After the press, it was left to rest for 12 months and, when the period came to an end, it was stored in American oak butts to age for over 20 years.

TASTING NOTES
Dark mahogany colour with aromas of coffee, dark chocolate, raisin, dried plums and apricots followed by hints of cinnamon, a little balsamic and a citric, orange sensation. On the palate its sweetness is perfectly balanced with its lively acidity. The finish is long and persistent.

SERVING SUGGESTIONS
Serve chilled and pair with dark chocolate, blue cheese, desserts and exotic fruits.

Reviews

93+ Points - Robert Parker
I guess in an attempt to rationalize the range, some labels have been merged and simplified, and the Gran Reserva or Don PX Añada range are now simply Don PX with a vintage. I tasted the 2002 Don PX, which has 17% alcohol and 399 grams of sugar and seems denser and more concentrated than the 1999 I tasted next to it. They are all different degrees or declinations of similar aromas and flavors, such as dates, raisins, coffee and espresso coffee. This comes through as balanced and tasty, not too sweet. They produced 9,000 bottles and 10,000 half bottles. The price is for a 750-milliliter bottle. Luiz Gutierrez sept 2022
