The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Echezeaux opens with an exuberant bouquet of roses, berries and spices. It shows gorgeous depth and finesse in a weightless, elegant style. The round, textured finish is gorgeous. Aux Echezeaux is on the border with Morey. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. (AG) (5/2011)

(from .47 ha parcel planted in 1930) A very fresh, cool and bright nose speaks of red berry fruit, warm earth, underbrush and a hint of the sauvage that carries over to the supple but entirely serious medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent precision on the firm, focused and persistent finish. Drink: 2015+ (1/2011)

I have to laugh, as there are not many domaines in Burgundy where the Gevrey bottling made from vines planted in 1928 is not labeled as the Vieilles Vignes cuvée, but that is actually the case with the Aux Echézeaux bottling at Domaine Fourrier. This wine can often be a tad sauvage out of the blocks, but the inherent elegance of 2009 has worked its magic here and this is an utterly polite young bottle of Gevrey villages. The nose offers up scents of red and black cherries, mustard seed, raw cocoa, a lovely base of soil and a floral topnote. On the palate the wine is fullish, long and sappy, with quite fine-grained tannins, lovely focus and impressive length and grip on the already quite complex finish. Classy juice.
