Smith Woodhouse wines are largely sourced from the 4.35 ha Quinta da Madalena, an "A" rated vineyard located in the valley of the Rio Torto which runs north into the Douro near Pinhão. This district has been recognised as one of the finest microclimates in the Douro for as long as Port has been made. Located on the valley floor and facing south the quinta enjoys conditions which lead to perfect ripening most years. More recently, wines sourced from the Quinta do Vale Coelho in the Douro Superior have been blended into Smith Woodhouse ports. Deep in the Douro Superior, the hottest and driest sub-region of the Douro, this river-front quinta faces south, and is also "A" rated, Nearly half of the 11.5 hectares is planted in old mixed vines.
