Tokaji is Hungary's biggest success story. Made since the sixteenth century, Tokaji is an extremely sweet wine that was adored by the Russian Tsars. Its transformation begins in the vineyard due to a natural phenomenon where berries are affected by the famous noble rot, a fungus that shrivels grapes, thus concentrating their aromatic profile and sweetness. It is vinified in a manner similar to Sherry, and is reputed to be the longest lived, non-fortified wine in existence (a few hundred years is not unheard of!).
1979 Tokaji Aszu 3 Puttonyos:
This is a rich and mature wine, with a nose of candied apricots and citrus fruit. On the palate it reveals honeyed and nutty flavours and it is sweet of course but with great acidity that gives it lovely freshness. It finishes satisfyingly long.
1981 Tokaji Szamorodni Edes:
This 1981 Tokaji is moderately sweet compared to the 1979, with a zesty, fresh acidity and notes of honeyed orange peel and hazelnuts with a clean, fresh finish.
Condition
Good condition, some tear and wear on the box but still very good considering its age.
