Yields were often reduced, and in some cases the wines lacked balance. However, the best producers — particularly in Bordeaux — managed the conditions carefully, producing wines that have matured into elegant and characterful examples of the vintage.
In Bordeaux, the wines are generally lighter in structure than those from great years, with less concentration but a refined, classical style. Now at full maturity, many Left Bank clarets display tertiary characteristics such as cedar, tobacco, leather and earthy notes, alongside softened dark fruit.
