A Wine or Port from this year would make an extremely rare 68 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary this year.

For Bordeaux, the 1957 vintage generally created highly acidic wines capable of aging. Some were exceptional, but others lacked richness; however there still may be some worth drinking. Italy enjoyed an exceptional vintage and there likely to still be some Barolos and Brunellos drinking very well. Port was good but went undeclared.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Chateau Lynch Bages 1957 Pauillac 5me Cru Classe
  • Sandeman 1957 Vintage Port
  • Blandys 1957 Vintage Bual Madeira
  • Barolo 1957 Giacomo Borgogno Riserva
  • Kopke 1957 Colheita Port

Bordeaux: A very good vintage. A cold summer led to a small crop and wines that had extremely high acidity. The high acidity has enabled the wines to last well beyond later, more celebrated, vintages. Well-stored examples of 1957 wines will still be very drinkable now.

Italian: The 1957 Italian vintage was a strong candidate for the ‘vintage of the decade’ in what was a run of solid vintages between 1954 and 1958. The main regions of Tuscany and Piedmont produced rich, full bodied wines. The 1957 wines are mature, but heavy-weights such as Brunello and Barolos will still keep for many years to come. These would make a brilliant wine gift for a birthday or anniversary celebration this year.

Portugal: The 1957 was a good vintage, although not generally declared. 1957 Port wines are very difficult to get hold of due to the tiny production.

    Tokaji, 1957

Aszu, 6 Puttonyos Monimpex - Azzu (Half litre, 50cl)

Hungary’s most famous dessert wine is Tokaji the legendary sweet elixir. It can only be spoken in the superlative about this wine, as it is a medicine, a real nectar. The name Tokaji (which is of Protected Designation of Origin) is used for labeling wines from this wine district. The location of the region has a unique climate, beneficial to this particular viniculture, due to the protection of the nearby mountains, long warm autumns and mists that come in from the River Bodrog, creating perfect conditions for noble rot. Creating the botrytised ('aszú') grapes for which the region is famous. A wonderful sweet wine from this renowned producer.

    Niepoort Port, 1957

    Colheita Port

"A green rim with a tawny core, sediment too. A deep, spicy nose shows dried spice and fleshy tamarind. In the mouth, it’s very concentrated, spicy and lively, with liquorice and darker treacle toffee notes. There’s a trace of bitterness to its slightly spirity finish, but it’s deliciously spicy with plenty of vigour." Sarah Amhed, The Wine Detective

An independent family business since 1842, through five generations. With the position of "niche player", Niepoort's mission is to maintain the production of distinctive ports and Douro wines, combining centuries-old tradition with innovation.
