The end of the decade was not the best for Bordeaux, with heavy rains diluting the wines. However, a poor year for reds meant a great year for Sauternes and Barsac. Burgundy and the Rhône Valley were both excellent and both Italy and Port enjoyed good solid vintages, and some are likely to still be drinking well now. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 56 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.
Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:
This Year in History: Fun Fact: The world’s largest aeroplane, The Boeing 747, makes its first-ever commercial flight.
Eurovision Winners: France, Netherlands, Spain and UNITED KINGDOM with the song "Boom Bang-a-Bang" by Lulu
Top Grossing Movie: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Bordeaux: The 1969 wine vintage was unkind to Bordeaux reds. Rain during the September harvest contributed to what was a small crop of light-weight wines that lacked longevity. Only first growth wines will be drinkable. However, sweet wines from the regions of Sauternes and Barsac were very good in this year and will last for many more years.
Italian: 1969 was a good vintage for Italian wines. The weather was good throughout the year enabling the grapes to reach a high degree of ripeness. Of particular note are the heavyweight, long-lived wines such as Barolo, Brunello and lighter wines such as Chianti and Valpolicella. The wines are now fully mature and still drinking well.
Portugal: A vintage Port from the 1969 vintage makes a perfect 54 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary. Some excellent Colheita (Tawny) Ports were produced from the 1969 harvest and these are highly recommended by our wine buyer. The 1969 vintage was good enough to yield a few single Quinta vintage ports, notably Taylors Vargellas and some exceptional Colheita ports.

Palmer Port, 1969
Colheita Port, Douro
50cl Bottle
Exclusive to Vintage Wine and Port
Tasting Note
The 1969 Palmer has a deep mahogany colour with olive highlights on the rim highlighting that this is a wine of great age. On the nose it has a very fine, elegant aroma of honey, caramel and butterscotch infused with a spicy redolence of black pepper and cinnamon. There are layers of complexity here with wild herbs and mint. The palate is perfectly balanced with a fresh acidity and sweetness. It has an amazing rich mellow flavour, molasses, caramel, dried figs, sultanas and dried fruits. The finish lasts for ages and is clean and fresh with zesty citrus notes. …

Quinta da Devesa, 1969
White Colheita Port, Douro in presentation box
92 Points - Wine Advocate
The Quinta da Devesa 1969 White Colheita Port is a treasure of the Douro Valley—an extraordinarily rare white port aged for nearly 50 years in seasoned oak casks before bottling in 2024. This single-harvest, long-aged expression is the result of decades of careful maturation under oxidative conditions in the estate’s traditional hillside cellars. Made from native white grapes such as Côdega de Larinho, Rabigato, Malvasia Fina, and others, it embodies the character and complexity that only time can create.
In the glass, it presents a radiant deep amber-gold hue with greenish olive edges, a visual hallmark of advanced barrel aging. …

The 1969 Barolo Cantine Prandi have come from the producer's cellars where they have laid undisturbed since bottling.
Cantine Prandi was established in the 1920s when grandfather Farinetti Majorino envisioned selling part of the wine produced for family use to the commercial market. In the 1960's his nephew Giovanni came to lend a hand and was instrumental in shaping the winery and its future development. Up to 2009, Giovanni's son Alessandro looked after the beautiful vineyards situated in the long hills surrounding Piemonte. In recent years, due to Alessandro's passing, the winery ceased production. …

J W Hart, 1969
Magnum (1.5l)
Bottled and Shipped by Warre
A late release LBV bottled and Shipped by Warre but rebranded for the French market as J.W. Hart.
Notes: An attractive bronze colour, looking fully mature; 40% opaque. A nose of sweet cherry, spiced beautifully with a grating of mace. Very mellow on the palate, fully mature with flavours of baked apple, cinnamon and cloves. Warm and spiced fruit. A little spearmint shows on the aftertaste, but quickly fades to a gentle black tea and apple finish. Fully mature Port, sliding gently into its place in history.

Nose: intensely aromatic and layered. Expect a bouquet of dried roses, potpourri, and old leather, typical of aged Barolo. Earthy and savoury notes like truffle, underbrush, and wet leaves would likely be prominent, along with hints of tobacco, cigar box, and perhaps a touch of menthol or eucalyptus.
Palate: smooth and harmonious, with tannins that have softened to a velvety texture. The acidity, while still present, would provide a balance that keeps the wine lively despite its age. Inferno is one of five viticultural sub-zones specifically identified as producing Valtellina wines of particularly high quality: the other four are Grumello, Sassella, Maroggia and Valgella. Inferno means 'hell' in Italian, and refers to the slopes between Sondrio town and the village of Tresivio. Although DOC laws do not explain the origins of this name, it has been suggested that in summer the slopes here get noticeably hotter than the rest of the valley. Just across Sondrio to the west is Sassella, the finest of the Valtellina sub-zones.

Nebbiolo, 1969
Cantina Sociale Barbera d'Alba
Clearance Offer - Last Bottle | Was £119 | Now £85
The Nebbiolo has a lovely earthy bouquet. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Good-quality Sangiovese is prized for its high acid, firm tannins and balanced nature. Savory flavors of dark cherries and black stone fruit are characteristic, and may be backed by secondary notes of tomato leaf and dried herbs. The use of oak has become more popular and this coaxes richer flavors from the grapes, tending toward plum and wild raspberry.

Lovely tawny colour with a brick hue. The nose shows violets and sweet cherry with hints of wintergreen. On the palate it may not be as sweet as the earlier Ports from the 60s, but that is very much a good thing. Improved with air time, and by the end could almost detect some rich and sweet stewed fruits and Christmas spices balanced by the warming alcohol. …

Valtellina, 1969
Tona - Villa Perla
Valtellina is one of Italy’s most dramatic wine regions, located in Lombardy, the vineyards are located on steep mountains. The principal grape variety is Chiavennasca (the local name for Piedmont’s Nebbiolo and an Italian grape varietal that has been cultivated since medieval times here). The DOCG wines are generally comprised of at least 90% Chiavennasca and then blended with other quality local grapes like Brugnola, Rossola, Pignola. Then there is a DOC Valtellina Rosso (also called Rosso di Valtellina DOC) which requires at least 80% of the blend be Chiavennasca and does not have minimum ageing requirements. …

Barolo, 1969
Prioli, Barolo, Piedmont
Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.
