The 1972 vintage was challenging for both Port and wine production in Europe. In Portugal's Douro Valley, the 1972 vintage was generally not declared by most Port houses. The weather conditions during the growing season were unfavorable, leading to wines that lacked concentration and depth. In Europe, including Italy, the 1972 vintage was also challenging due to adverse weather conditions. The vintage was characterized by a cool and wet growing season, which led to difficulties with grape ripening and resulted in wines that lack depth and concentration. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 53 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Grahams Port 1972 Single Harvest Colheita
  • Fonseca Port 1972 Guimaraens Single Quinta Vintage Port
  • Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac 1972
  • Grignolino 1972 Mascarello Natale fu Maurizio, red wine

Bordeaux: Bordeaux 1972 wines are generally characterised by having good colour, with dryness and high acidity. However, the style was for early drinking and very few examples exist today. The growing season was difficult with the grape development held back by inclement weather - this did not allow the grapes to fully ripen by harvest time. However, sweet wines from Sauternes and Barsac of this year are very good.

Italian: Only a small crop of 1972 wine was produced in Italy and the wines are now very rare. The growing season was held back by inclement weather in the main Italian wine regions of Piedmont and Tuscany. Tuscany produced a small crop of Brunello and Chianti, generally characterised as having good colour, high acidity and some dryness. The best of the vintage originates from the more southerly regions.

Portugal: A good vintage that was not declared, some vintage port and single quintas were produced in this year. Port wines from 1972 are now fully mature but well stored examples will last for many years more, making them a great 53 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary.

    Bordeaux, 1972

    Mestrezat Preller

Bordeaux, in the south-west of France, needs little introduction to anyone with an interest in wine. One of the world's most prolific wine regions, it also manages to rank among the most famous and prestigious. The secrets of Bordeaux's wine success (other than magical Bordeaux Blend) are its three trump cards: diversity, quality and quantity. The majority of Bordeaux wines are the dry, medium-bodied reds that made the region famous.

    Carinena, 1972

    Don Ramon

Carinena is just one of several DO titles used for the wines of Aragon, northern Spain. Winemaking in the area dates back to at least Roman times, and records from that era confirm that locals drank Carinena wines mixed with honey. Many other historical records attest to the quality of the wines from Carinena; King Ferdinand I of Aragon listed it as his preferred wine above all others and the French philosopher Voltaire thought it heavenly. Wine has long been the economic mainstay of the region and a source of great pride and renown.

    Chateau Boyd-Cantenac, 1972

    Cantenac Margaux 3rd Growth Classification

The 1972 Château Boyd-Cantenac is a well-aged Third Growth Margaux, though it comes from a difficult vintage. The 1972 Bordeaux growing season was cool and damp, leading to uneven ripening and lighter wines with limited aging potential. As a result, many wines from this year are now past their peak, though well-stored bottles may still offer a glimpse into Margaux’s refined character.

Now over 50 years old, this wine would have evolved significantly, likely showing softened fruit, earthy notes, and delicate tertiary aromas. While Château Boyd-Cantenac is known for producing elegant and structured wines, the vintage’s natural challenges mean that its longevity is uncertain.
