A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. A quietly superb ’83 from this under-sung Fladgate house, now in its sweet spot. Deep garnet fading toward tawny at the rim. The nose is lifted and complex: black cherry and damson, fig and date, orange peel and violets, with cacao, coffee bean, cedar and a gentle eucalyptus/menthol lift.
