Chateau Leoville Poyferre, 1981

St Julien 2me Growth Classification

A deep tawny rim with a mahogany core. This has a delightful nose, very good intensity with notes of cooked meats, roasted chestnut, toffee and a touch of marzipan. It smells as if it is from a hot vintage! After five minutes in the glass, it become a little muffled but develops a touch of mint. The palate certainly has more fruit concentration than the 1980, a rounded texture, quite sharp acidity with notes of sour cherry, a touch of leather and a dry, rather gamey, but attenuated finish. Not bad for a 1981

Chateau Yquem, 1981

Sauternes

*** 90 Points (outstanding) Robert Parker ***

"The 1981 is certainly an outstanding Yquem, but it will not be considered one of this property's greatest efforts. Light golden, with a moderately intense bouquet of spicy, vanillin oak, fresh melons, and tropical fruit, this full-bodied Yquem has average acidity and a plump, viscous, somewhat precocious feel on the palate. Remarkably long and clean in the finish, it will develop relatively rapidly. Anticipated maturity: Now-2015. Last tasted, 3/87." E Robert Parker"

Louis Roederer Cristal, 1981

Champagne

A rare bottle of 1981 Cristal from Louis Roederer

Review From Vinous tasting.
The 1981 Cristal is one of the biggest surprises of the night. Although it is fully mature, the 1981 is fabulous tonight. Hints of roasted almond, orange peel, caramel and spices suggest a fully mature wine, yet the 1981 has a sense of energy and overall symmetry that is impossible to miss. The 1981 won’t last forever, but it is without question one of the most rewarding vintages to drink today. Vinous 2014.

This 40 Year Old tawny port from Quevedo... has a colour of golden amber with green hints. Huge complexity of aromas, from nuts, to sweet dried fruits and at a certain point, it smells like honeycomb. On the palate it is thick and intense, with the dried fruit coming along and it never finishes.

Ryst-Dupeyon Armagnac, 1980

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
50cl bottle

The 1980 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyon was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

1980 Taylor's Port, 1980

Vintage Port

An outstanding wine scoring 91 points.

Review: "A deep, clear garnet colour. The nose is very backward, quite austere and conservative with notes of cherry and raspberry leaf, a touch of cigar box developing with aeration. It perhaps lacks a little joie-de-vivre, especially when compared to vintage in the 1970s. the palate is attractive though, with notes of raspberry, plum, white pepper, blood orange and a touch of apricot. Very good acidity, perhaps like the -55, this is a Taylor's playing it safe, unwilling to take chances and yet it is lush on the finish with its plum and briary flavours.
