Sandeman Vintage Port, 1985

Vintage Port

"Sandeman is one of the biggest and most conspicuous of the port houses, with extensive interests in the sherry business as well. They advertise significantly and their products are well-represented in virtually every American marketplace. The quality is quite good given the quantity of wine produced...The 1985 has less of a deep-ruby/purple color, but it does offer a spice-box, fruitcake sort of aroma, mildly sweet, medium- to full-bodied flavors, and a ripe, tasty finish. Not a heavyweight, this wine represents a lighter style of vintage port. (1/ 1989) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Wine Spectator
Elegant and balanced, but a little short on concentration.

Taylor's Port, 1985

Vintage Port
Slightly discoloured labels

"Typical for Taylor's. Notes of woodspice and pepper, very slightly spirity. Nevertheless, a delicious texture on entry, supple and stylish, although with a very firm weight, firm tannins and good acids. Again this is fine to drink now, although it still holds some potential now. Very good indeed, bordering on excellent. From a Port Styles tasting." 17.5+/20 (November 2007), Wine Doctor (online).

Warre's Vintage Port, 1985

Vintage Port

From the outstanding 1985 Vintage
Reviews: "Lovely orange skins nose, together with nuts and figs. On the palate, it has finesse, elegance and such a sweet kickback. Massively enchanting and, now it is over the magic 20 years, perfection to drink."
Serena Sutcliffe , Cuisine & Wine Asia 2008

Very very dark. Sweet, spicy, liquorice nose. Very broad start to the palate and then dried fruits on the finish. Lots of firm tannins still. Still relatively embryonic. Heat on the finish. Lovely spice on the finish. Not the most stereotypically feminine Warre style of wine. Powerful finish. Almost brawny with some wild fruit and flower flavours on the nose.

Chateau Clerc Milon Rothschild, 1984

Pauillac 5th Growth Classification

A saturated dark ruby/purple-coloured, medium-bodied, well-made wine, Clerc-Milon's 1984 exhibits textbook, blackcurrant and weedy tobacco scents. Although the wine is slightly tannic, it does not reveal any of the vintage's astringency or vegetal characteristics. It should offer attractive, velvety-textured, surprisingly fine drinking.

Pauillac 5me Grand Cru Classe

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Amber-tinged medium red. A touch of volatile acidity blows off with aeration to reveal aromas of underbrush, tobacco and faded flowers. The tobacco and underbrush elements carry through onto the palate, where they are joined by slightly sweeter notes of redcurrant, quinine and cedar. Finishes clean and smooth, with modest length. Chateau Rieussec, 1984

Sauternes 1er Grand Cru Classe

A very good Riessec and one of the few decent wines produced in Bordeaux in this year. Colour rusty, deep gold. A beguiling bouquet of apricot, honey, molasses, old English Christmas cake, toffee and smoke. A beautiful texture in the mouth, weighty, viscous and satiny. Very rich, toffee, honey, treacle and poached pears and apricots. Very ripe but with sufficient acidity to hold it all together. Complex and multi-layered.

Amarone della Valpolicella, 1983

Bertani

This wine is made from grapes harvested in various vineyards located on hills in the Valpolicella zone (Mezzane and Tregnago hills). Different sources and different grape varieties are important to obtain well-balanced wines with the fine structure that only a few single areas in the Valpolicella zone can provide. Notes: Color: strong ruby red. Clear and transparent. Bouquet: notes of vanilla and ethereal airs depending on the period of aging in the barrel; notes of sweet fruits such as currants, blueberries, cherries depending on the varieties of grapes. Flavor: wine with a velvety, raisiny character combined with the structure and typical stylish bitterness to give it good balance.

The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. Barolo, 1983

Marchesi di Barolo

Barolo lies just south-west of Alba in Italy's north-western Piedmont region. It is considered one of the finest and longest-lived wines, often referred to as 'the king of wines and the wine of kings'. Wine production is strictly limited to the vineyards located on steep hills around the towns of Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba, Despite the different characteristics of these wines due to the varied terroir, they do display similar traits. These include a garnet color, powerful structure, firm tannins and high levels of acidity and alcohol, with the capacity to age for many years.

Reviews
"As I have noted consistently, this can be a breathtaking wine, but having tasted it close to a dozen times since the last edition of this book, over half the bottles were marred by tainted corks. In fact, one would almost wonder if there was TCA problem in part of the wine storage area. The percentage of corked half-bottles is even higher than in the regular format. However, when clean this 1983, which has seemingly reached full maturity far faster than I would have guessed a mere four years ago, has a dense, murky plum/purple color and a gorgeous nose of smoked herbs,

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1983

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 91 Points - Robert Parker ***
*** 94-96 Points - Wine Journal ***

Reviews: "Evolving in a positive fashion, 1983 is turning out to be a fine vintage for Mouton. Although not a big wine, this medium-weight Mouton displays an attractive nose of blackcurrants, black-cherries, olives, and minerals. Medium-bodied, with sweet but noticeable tannin in the finish, as well as beautiful elegance and complexity, this wine is close to reaching its plateau of maturity. I have always thought it resembled this property's 1966. It should last for another 20 years. Last tasted, 7/93." Robert Parker Wine Advocate 1993

"Dense cedary nose with lots of plum, cassis and cigar box aromas.
