La Spinetta - Vigneto Garretti

JS 94 - James Suckling

"Lots of dried roses with stems to the strawberry and cherry character. It’s full-bodied and chewy with lots of fruit and wood tannins that pucker your mouth now. But it should come around nicely with bottle age. Try after 2023."

Barolo, 2017

Massolino - Parafada

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"The Massolino 2017 Barolo Parafada draws its fruit from Serralunga d'Alba (where this winery is located) and is often the most muscular and brawny wine in this portfolio. That is not necessarily true in the 2017 vintage that sees extra richness and concentration across the board. Morello cherry and dried blackberry are followed by tarry spice, sweet hazelnut paste and a rusty mineral note of iron ore. For sure, this vintage draws out the sweeter and softer side of Parafada."

Vietti - Ravera

JD 98 - Jeb Dunnuck

"Located in Novello, from three hectares of the Ravera MGA with southwest exposure, the 2017 Barolo Ravera was aged for 32 months in large oak casks. It is forward and expressive with fresh pine, candied cranberry, orange oil, and aniseed. The palate is full of energetic tension, balance, and purity, with apricot pit, tea leaf and saline minerality. An inspiring wine to close out the Vietti 2017 lineup. Drink 2025-2050."

Barolo, 2017

Vietti - Lazzarito

JD 97 - Jeb Dunnuck

"From the southwest facing amphitheater of Lazzarito in Serralunga d’Alba the 2017 Barolo Lazzarito was aged for 30 months in a combination of large oak casks and barrique. The nose is layered with elegant spice and floral notes of cedar, red plum, and brushed leather. There is incredible balance within its structure, which has deceptive ease for early drinking. Hold 3-5 years or drink 2023-2046."

Barolo, 2017

Vietti - Brunate

JD 96 - Jeb Dunnuck

"Sourced from an average of 54-year-old vines in Brunate of La Morra, the 2017 Barolo Brunate was aged for 32 months in large oak cask and barriques. It offers brooding aromas of licorice, dried currant, and cedar. Congruent on the palate with mineral-rich turned earth, there is a firmly built structure with balance. Drink 2024-2050."

JS 96 - James Suckling

"Beautiful, sweet fruit and perfumes on the nose with fresh flowers, such as roses. Full-bodied with fine, dusty tannins and a long, persistent finish. Very caressing. Builds on the palate at the end. Drink after 2024.

Bourgogne, 2017

Grand Vin de Borgogne, Florent Garaudet Monthelie Vieilles Vignes

This is a complex red, with powerful, forward black cherry aromatics, exotic spice, and hints of earth. Florent’s use of 400-liter barrels for aging adds dimensional texture without overpowering the nose or palate. On the palate, this rare wine evokes the silkiness of Volnay and the power of Pommard.

About this wine producer: Like Raphaël Bérêche, Florent Garaudet is a self-confident, socially intelligent visionary, who, at the age of twenty-three was impatient to strike out on his own. So instead of coming to work alongside his father, Paul Garaudet, on the estate that has been in the family for five generations,

Casa Ferreirinha, 2017

Quinta de Leda

The 2017 Quinta da Leda is a top-quality red wine of great complexity and elegance, a fine example of the richness and modernity of great Douro wines today. It is an honoured member of the range of Casa Ferreirinha, the company with the longest tradition of production of top-quality unfortified Douro wines and one of the most respected Douro names throughout the world.

Tasting Notes: Quinta da Leda is very deep red in colour. Its aroma is intense and extremely complex, dominated by ripe plum and blackcurrant, resin and cedar, as well as clove and nutmeg, then notes of violet, and a touch of chocolate (signs of a ripe year) always perfectly integrated with subtle oak of excellent quality.

Chateau Cissac, 2017

Medoc, Cru Bourgeois

A 2017 vintage Bordeaux wine. This is the beauty of decent Cru Bourgeois Bordeaux if stored well - it makes demands on the taster (patience and consideration). Not a wine from those who prefer to 'pop and pour' who miss out on most of the quality and character.

The 2017 has a good rich colour - browning just a little at the rim. This bottle demands patience when opening as it needs time to develop. Good blackcurrant nose. Plum, damson on the palate with balancing blackcurrant acidity. Dusty tannins on the end palate at first but the tannin softened in the glass, even without food. With food it is excellent.

Tasting Note
Dense inky core fading to a magenta rim. A seductive Croft nose, ripe and voluptuous but with the depth and density characteristic of the 2017 vintage. As usual, plump, juicy blackcurrant, black cherry and raspberry form the backdrop. However, the nose is soon drawn into a vortex of heady, complex aroma in which resiny scents of eucalyptus and gumcistus blend with pungent notes of sage and mint, fresh hints of grapefruit and a mellow spiciness. On the palate, firm, sinewy tannins are wrapped in a thick envelope of dense, velvety texture.

Tasting notes
It is rare to see such tremendous depth and intensity in colour as this wine displays The freshness of the floral aromas is very attractive with a dominance of rockrose, a flower that grows wild around the hills of Senhora da Ribeira. On the palate, it is exceptionally full-bodied, rich and powerful with black fruit coming to the fore.

Tasting Note
A narrow magenta ring around a core of inky purple black. The nose opens with a burst of dark, woodland fruit, dense and succulent, blended with fresher, more vibrant red berry aromas. A slatey minerality holds this exuberant fruitiness in check. At this stage, the nose is still reserved and discreetly aromatic, revealing leafy, balsamic scents and cedary notes of sawn wood. The first impression on the palate, as on the nose, is of tightly packed, dense dark berry fruit, which then explodes on the mid-palate and surges into the long finish.
