Chateau Lagrange, 1974

St julien 3rd Growth Classification

This third growth Saint-Julien property dates back to 1796, when it was founded and heavily expanded by Napoleon’s finance minister, Count Jean Valère Cabarrus. He owned it until 1825, when Count Duchatel purchased it, introducing a fine drainage system and overseeing its success in the 1855 Classification.

The 1974 Chateau Lagrange shows good ripe cherry fruit, a supple texture and a spicy finish with a mature soft flavour.

Chateau Magdelaine is a small estate whose vineyards extend on to the famous St Emilion limestone ridge (Ch. Ausone). The wines on this Chateau were Merlot dominated as the Merlot grape performs particularly well on these limestone-rich soils. In most years Merlo is 90% of the component of Chateau Magdelaine more than any other Premier Grand Cru Classé from St Emilion. The final vintage of Magdelaine was 2011, before it was swallowed up by Ch. Bélair-Monange.

It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. Inferno, 1974

Inferno is one of five viticultural sub-zones specifically identified as producing Valtellina wines of particularly high quality: the other four are Grumello, Sassella, Maroggia and Valgella. Inferno means 'hell' in Italian, and refers to the slopes between Sondrio town and the village of Tresivio. Although DOC laws do not explain the origins of this name, it has been suggested that in summer the slopes here get noticeably hotter than the rest of the valley. Just across Sondrio to the west is Sassella, the finest of the Valtellina sub-zones.

Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavoured wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.
