Terre del Barolo - Riserva

Barolo lies just south-west of Alba in Italy's north-western Piedmont region. It is considered one of the finest and longest-lived wines, often referred to as 'the king of wines and the wine of kings'. Wine production is strictly limited to the vineyards located on steep hills around the towns of Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba, Despite the different characteristics of these wines due to the varied terroir, they do display similar traits. These include a garnet color, powerful structure, firm tannins and high levels of acidity and alcohol, with the capacity to age for many years.

The palate is very well balanced, slightly medicinal on the entry but showing much better fruit concentration than the Margaux, perfectly judged acidity and fine but firm tannins holding everything together. It has tautness on the linear finish that is so classic Lafite and in retrospect, this is the best bottle of Lafite ’62 to have passed my palate.

Sauternes 1er Grand cru Classe, Label badly stained

91 Points Wine Journal.

" Moderate Clear lucid gold with green tints. The nose is very elegant and well defined, touches of wet wool, honey, wood resin and barley sugar (a la Barsac). I wish it had more vigour and complexity, for it is rather overwhelmed by the Coutet and the Suduiraut. The palate is far better than the nose with a lovely creamy, harmonious texture with perfect acidity and balance. Citrus peel, fresh ginger, dried apricot, ginger and orange sorbet with noticeable residual sugar on the finish. This is probably an underrated Yquem given market prices, but the modest nose means I must temper my appraisal.

Fracia, 1962

Nino Negri

The classic Valtellina Superiore wine is deep crimson in color, and has a rich bouquet of dried cherries, pencil shavings, tar and roses – the tell-tale sign of a wine made from Nebbiolo. As might be expected for a mountain-grown wine made from Nebbiolo, it is light-bodied and laced with grippy tannins. Although generally weightier and more concentrated than standard Rosso di Valtellina wines, they are almost always lighter in both body and power than the most famous of all Nebbiolo-based wines, Barolo and Barbaresco.

Marzemino is a red Italian wine grape that is primarily grown around Isera, south of Trentino. The wine is most noted for its mention in the opera Don Giovanni of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ("Versa il vino! Eccellente Marzemino!"). The vine ripens late and is susceptible to many grape diseases including oidium. Wine produced from the grape has a characteristic dark tint and light plummy taste. The Nebbiolo has a lovely earthy bouquet. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavoured wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavours of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

A very rare bottle of "Crusted port" a blend of more than one vintage. The 1962 Noval (bottled 1965) is actually a blend of 1/3 Nacional 1962 and 2/3 Noval 1963. Normal convention is to label the bottle with the bottling date.

"Bottled in the UK by Hedges & Butler. Described by Hedges & Butler as "2/3rds of the blend is the regular Noval 1963 and 1/3rd is the Noval Nacional 1962; bottled in 1965".
Deep rose colour, light brown rim. Lightly spicy on the attractive nose, full of sweet redcurrants. Silky texture, spicy midpalate then lots of dried red fruit. Lovely long and lingering finish.

"Recioto," as in "Recioto della Valpolicella," refers to a dessert wine made from grapes that were dried on mats after picking. This process turns the grapes closer to raisins, concentrating the flavors. The wines are lovely and taste how you'd expect raisins-turned-wine to taste, rich and sweet.
