Chateau Lafite Rothschild

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe, Level vts

Château Lafite Rothschild 1971 proves that Lafite Rothchild's wines always live up to its reputation, and it is the most consistent of first growths.

According to Jamie Goode (of wineanorak.com): "...the 1971s have consistently been undervalued. Thirty years' on, only the best of the vintage will still be at anything like their peak. But it's worth remembering that back in '71 Bordeaux wines were still made for long ageing. Yields have become considerably higher in recent years, and it's arguable that even the best properties no longer make such long-lived wines."

Reviews..
"Has an aroma like an aged Burgundy, with cherry and spice; flavor is mature, soft, very elegant.

Chateau Rieussec

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe HALF BOTTLE 37.5 cl

A superb 95 point (Wine Journal) 1971 dessert wine oozing with character. "A similar colour to the 1976, perhaps even slightly more youthful. An exquisite nose of white flowers, coconut, apricot and white peach. Very fine definition. Lovely balance on the palate that has vibrant acidity, harmony, with notes of fresh citrus fruit laced with a touch of clear honey. Surprisingly minerally on the balletic finish. A superb 1971 that has decades ahead of it. Tasted November 2006. Now-2020+." Neil Martin, Wine Journal, 2007

Chateau Roquetaillade La Grange, 1971

Graves - HALF BOTTLE 37.5cl

A classic Bordeaux nose, with tobacco, soil and meat floating around a core of dark plums and cherry aromas. The palate is still just on the right side of drinking nicely, with decent acidity keeping its pleasant, albeit rather simple flavours of cassis and plums rather fresh and lively. A good finish with tones of plum and cherries.

Chianti Colli Senesi, 1971

Lorini

Chianti Colli Senesi is perhaps Chianti's most significant subzone, located on the hills surrounding Siena in the southern part of the Chianti region. The area overlaps some of Tuscany's most famous wine names – Montalcino, Montepulciano and San Gimignano – with the Chianti Colli Senesi title used to cover Sangiovese-based wines from the less prestigious vineyards of the area.

Cotes du Rhone, 1971

Chanut Freres

Côtes du Rhône is a huge appellation in the south of France encompassing 40,300 ha. Plenty of white and rosé wine is produced in Côtes du Rhône but there can be no doubt that red is king. Usually Grenache will dominate the blend (except in the north where Syrah is allowed to be top dog, but these wines are relatively few) and is normally partnered with Syrah and/or Mourvèdre but a further 18 varieties are also permitted! A cheerful example might be light, soft, fruity and easy-drinking, while the finest examples may be full-bodied, concentrated, intense, spicy and ageworthy. But what they all invariably have in common is a fabulous sense of place and lashings of personality and character.

Dolcetto, 1971

delle Langhe, Marchesi di Barolo

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

D'Oliveiras Madeira

D'Oliveiras Sercial Madeira

Raisins, plums, walnuts and a hint of prunes are the aromas in this wonderful Madeira. The scent fills the room as soon as it is open. Pouring it into the glass you notice the crystal clear golden brown colour. You swirl and smell, noticing the raisins and the walnuts. You take a sip, the flavors of raisins and plums fills the front of your mouth, not too sweet. You swish and swallow, the walnuts taking over in the back of the mouth. The taste lingers…

Try this dry Madeira as the ultimate aperitif. Its fresh acidity opens your tatting buds, then you’re ready to go. The right choice for salads with vinaigrette and fresh starters, it pairs marvellously with almonds, goat’s cheese, sushi, avocado and olives.
