Barolo, 1961
Terre del Barolo - Riserva
Barolo lies just south-west of Alba in Italy's north-western Piedmont region. It is considered one of the finest and longest-lived wines, often referred to as 'the king of wines and the wine of kings'. Wine production is strictly limited to the vineyards located on steep hills around the towns of Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba, Despite the different characteristics of these wines due to the varied terroir, they do display similar traits. These include a garnet color, powerful structure, firm tannins and high levels of acidity and alcohol, with the capacity to age for many years. …

Barolo, 1961
Rivetto Ercole & Figli
Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Chateau Batailley, 1961
Pauillac, 5th Growth Classification
*** 92 Points - Neil Martin ***
Tasted at the Batailley vertical tasting at the château, the 1961 Batailley can be astonishing if you chance upon a tip-top bottle (cf. my tasting notes back in 2007). This was a good example but not in the same class as that. It commences well on the nose, still fresh and tensile with graphite infusing the black fruit that maybe do not have as much freshness and precision as an impeccable bottle might convey. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh line of acidity, decayed red berry fruit, a touch of black cherry, cedar and truffle, with smoke toward the finish that is dense and solid. …

Chateau Canon, 1961
New
St Emilion
One of the greatest vintages of the post-war period. This exceptional vintage has the peculiarity of producing a tiny crop of exceptional quality. Indeed, after spring frosts which cut the burden of the grapes by half, grapes of a perfect maturity and exceptional concentration are harvested in a hot and sunny climate.
Clean, brilliant deep ruby-brick with orange rim. Initial nose showed pleasant, complex cedar, plum, violets and leather, with addition of slight cigar box. palate concurrently shows more plummy fruit. The wine is full-bodied, with ample supple tannins and an extremely long …

Chateau Clerc Milon Mondon, 1961
Grand Cru Classe Pauillac
The 1961 Clerc-Milon from the legendary 1961 vintage is a classic Pauillac, with deep leather and tobacco aromas swirling around a lighter core of sweet cassis, earth and capsicum notes. The palate was completely resolved and almost seemed to melt in the mouth, with soft, barely there tannins and perfectly integrated acidity dripping through lovely, pure notes of cassis and capsicum, earth and mineral, with just a twist of black tea at the finish.
In the 18th century, Château Clerc Milon formed part of the vast estates of the seigneury of Lafite. Sold as a "national asset" in the Revolution, it was acquired in 1789 by the Clerc family, which joined its name to that of Milon, the Pauillac hamlet where the estate is located. …

Chateau Rauzan-Segla, 1961
Margaux 2nd Growth Classification
The nose is attractive with dried orange peel, more fruit concentration than the 1966 with ripe blackberry, hedgerow and a touch of violets. The palate is medium-bodied, lacking the vigour and vivacity of the previous bottle but with good acidity. Briary, redcurrant and leather towards the finish.

Chateau Troplong Mondot, 1961
St Emilion Grand Cru Classe (Mid-shoulder)
The 1961 Troplong Mondot is a very dark plummy red colour.
The nose is overwhelming with dark fruit some mushroom and vanilla. After 30 minutes in the glass it seems to go down after showing more red cherry fruit and a higher acidity. After this it seems like having a second peak where there is a beautiful coming together of plummy and red fruit aromas, packed in a perfect acidity. Cellar tracker Review

Dolcetto, 1961
Cremosina Reserva Speciale
A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.
