Krohn Port, 1965

Colheita single harvest port in individual wooden box

Deep and intense tawny colour for its age with an amber-brown rim. Powerful, racy nose with very complex aromas of brown spices, violet perfume, and balsamic. Lively, full and unctuous with long pecan nut and toffee finish, but well balanced in acidity, sweetness, and alcohol. Wiese & Krohn was founded in 1865 by two young Norwegians, Theodor Wiese & Dankert Krohn. At the beginning, it was a very small firm, based on the export of Port wine. In 1880 Theodor Wiese decided to sell his share to Dankert Krohn - the Company was simply too small to be shared by two owners - but he went on working for W&K as a commercial agent in Norway.

Krohn Port, 1965

Vintage Port - in own wooden case

Tasting note: Tawny brown of medium intensity and a narrow amber rim. The nose of this wine is sumptuous in its richness and complexity. The undercurrent of creamy butterscotch aroma is overlaid with notes of vanilla and raisin, a discreet fragrance of violets and pungent resiny scents of garigue. The palate is round and velvety, finishing with a surge of rich caramel flavour. A seductive Vintage Port, one of the best examples from this year.

Barbaresco, 1964

Gaja

"1961 may have been the greatest vintage of the 1960s but 1964 is remarkable for its balance,’ said Angelo, noting that 1999 and 2004 were similarly notable for their unusual combination of both quality and quantity. This was quite stunning – what a treat for all 200 of us to enjoy a 45-year-old wine in such brilliant condition. So harmonious and velvety, yet still with great freshness. Sweet, mild – a great testament to a winemaking dynasty." 18.5/20, Jancis Robinson.com

Barolo, 1964

Franco Fiorina

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.
